I finally received all the parts in the mail for my mother's computer that I'm building for her. Well I've attched everything and got it all together but nothing powers on after pushing the power button. I then go and mess with all the wires, checking them one by one making sure that they are attached firmly. When I come to the power supply connection on the mobo I unplug it then I plug it back in only when I plug it half-way in the CPU fan comes on and the floppy disk drive lights up but nothing else, the DVD drive won't open I don't hear anything being booted up, zilch! What's th problem here? I mean everything is new so nothing should be broken BTW, what are those two switches on the power supply for, one is red and it says 230 on one side then 115 on the other. The other switch is black and it has a 0 on one side and a - on the other. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

DON"T CHANGE IT FROM 115 to 230 unless you are outside the USA.

It's the voltage input into your power supply. (keep it on 115)

make sure u attached it to the mobo correctly. Also make sure you put the ram in correctly (can lead to bootup problems).

Yes, both of these are correct.

Some cases and some enclosures for I/O components have a switch that must be pressed to denote that the case is on the PC. Do you have some sort of switch of this type? Look for it in a place where the case would touch it...

Other than that, is the word this.

I'm sorry but I don't fully understand this, what input/output components are you speaking of?

[IMG] It depends. Check out the "case is open" switch.

No, sorry it has nothing like that. The case has a wire that color but it says speaker on it. Damn it, the first one I built turned right on and now this one is giving me crap!

No beeps, screen never comes on. The only thing that comes on is the CPU fan and the floppy drive light and that's not when I push the power button, it's when I unplug the power supply from the mobo and then slowly plug it in half-way but once I plug it in all the way the fan and the floppy light both go off.

Make sure nothing is grounded. When this happens to me, I usually pull everything out and wire it together on my desk (put something insualtive under the motherboard!) If it works - then I know that I just stuck it in the case wrong and I try again.

It also could be a bad power supply. If you have another one lying around - try switching them out.

I doubt anything is wrong with the components, but you can try unplugging the hardrive/DVD/floppy to see if you can isolate the problem.

    lil pun,

the motehrboard manual should have instructions on how to flash the BIOS .....that essentially resets the motherboard (i had a certain brand of MB that i used to use and everytime i installed the video card, i had to flash the BIOS to get it to power on)

also, trying just plugging in the power supply, video card, memory, and processor and power on ....if it the power comes on, then start plugging in devices one by one and that may help you isolate if one of the components is creating the problem

    Pun pun pun.....

Im gonna have to start billing you soon...:p

ok.....first off....(this applies to all times when troubleshooting)...

    Disconnect everything from the motherboard....

install one stick of RAM....make sure the CPU is properly installed and the heatsinkg is in proper position withthe thermal grease applied.

hook up all the switch connections...and check to ensure the polarities are correct(+/-)...alot of the times, this doesnt really matter...but when troubleshooting...you want to be positive things are properly attached. Also make sure all power connections are tight and fully plugged in

now....does the mobo have builtin video?
    if so, disregard this...

do not put any cards in.....
none at all.....what you want is bare mobo with only RAM and CPU installed.

turn it on....do the fans and lights come on?

if not....then we have to switch out parts to find the faulty one.

Repeat with a different stick of RAM ....does it come on?
if still no.....try another power supply...it never hurts to have a exttra power supply laying around....or you can just retrun it if dosnt fix the problem.

can you check your RAm in another machine that you know works?

if the RAM checks out, and the power supply isnt the problem..

then you got a faulty mobo(or messed it up installing it, can you say static?)

IF things work right when you pare it down to the basics...then start adding cards in and testing to ensure it starts up between every new component until you find the one that keeps it from booting.

dude...you cant flash the mobo if it wont even powerr up.

besides....Im not real positive we want Pun tryin something like flashing the biios since you knwo what happens when it gets messed up.

PUN....another thing.....double check to ensure the "BIOS(cmos) Reset" jumper isnt on wrong(manual will show you this)

you might even try moving the jumper to reset and leaving it that way for a few minutes....then put it back where it belongs and try again.

    no

reseting the bios to the default settings via jumper manipulation is reseting the bios...

Flashing the BIOS is a procedure that you do by booting up to a startup disk withthe flash program on it and the BIOS .bin file....then you run the flash program to rewrite the instructions stored in the CMOS(flash memory)
