Do you ever hear sloan taking it to the press. I haven't. There is a difference between reaming your players when they screw but to do it all the time and to the press is something different. JVG never praises anyone. All he does is b**** and moan even when our players are playing well. It wears on people.

Plus Sloan is a million times more respected than JVG as a coach and a person.

He just praised Yao in the Chronicle today! He said he played assertively! Right after he gushed about T-Mac for a paragraph!

Oh, and the "yelling" that started this thread? It wasn't even to the press! It was right to Yao's face, behind closed doors, where coaches are SUPPOSED to criticize their players!

*******, I'm getting so sick of defending a coach I don't even care much for, but some of you are just so unfairly brutal.

I can completely understand why Yao hates getting chewed out by Van Gundy. This is a very common phenomenom in immigrants to this (or any) country. Yao's grasp of English isn't great. Van Gundy chews him out. Any American player would be able to immediately respond and defend himself. Unfortunately, Yao is handicapped by his inability to understand and speak English well. So, he just sits there and takes it because he can't really defend himself in English. Slowly, he starts to hate his coach. Talk to anyone who's immigrated to this country and had to learn the language and they'll understand why Yao can't stand Van Gundy. Not a smart move by Van Gundy. He should realize that Yao will not react the same way as other players.

can you blame him? Yao was responsible for 3 straight turnovers in the last couple minutes against portland. One was not his fault. But there were two critical times Yao recieve the ball down low and instead of turning and shooting with confidence, he tried to put the ball on the floor and get closer to the basket and turned the ball over, and the next play, he passed up turnaround close to the basket and was called for traveling.

In that situation in LA, being aggressive would have meant to take the first shot when he was open instead of being afraid to miss. Yao will make in this league when starts racking a few 8-25 shooting games. That'll mean that he's not afraid to fail.

Where the hell did Yao say he hated Van Gundy?! All he said was that he thought JVG's rant was a bit harsh! Holy ****, I wish people would stop reading whatever they want into the poor guy's words!

Yao's unhappiness is not a good sign for the Rockets. Everyone automatically assumes that Yao will be loyal to the Rockets and resign, but if he can't stand the head coach, it's pretty much a guarantee that he'll leave if he can. He doesn't need the extra money. His endorsements already make him one of the best paid players in the NBA. Plus, Rudy is now in LA, and it sounds like Yao still likes Rudy. Not mention the natural appeal of Los Angeles and its huge Chinese community. He can get dim sum whenever he wants.

Of course he would never say he hated his coach. But this type of dynamic breeds resentment. That's not a good sign.

It's hilarious but I give you credit for coming up with a new reason why Yao would bolt for LA.

I don't know. Maybe Yao thinks its funny. I think I would be laughing if a Chinese coach was cussing at me in Chinese!!! Imagine if Shaq was being cussed out in Chinese. :D

I sure hope Yao doesn't go INSANE and turns into a Ron Artest or Latrell Sprewell and strangles Van Grumpy!!! Yao could be benched for a whole season!! :(

This is possibly the funniest post I've ever seen on this BBS. I couldn't agree more. I think we all see amazing potential in Yao and we just want him to live up to that potential.

OMG! Grow the hell up Yao!

How can anyone - even the biggest YOFs out there defend him when - if true - Yao says something like this.

Yao is acting like a big PUS!

I will agree that the word "weak" was not the best choice of words, even used indirectly. I apologize. I do not think Ming is weak, I think he is sensitive. Ming's comments on numerous occasions, IMO, suggests that he is sensitive, intelligent, humorous, thoughtful, reflective, and respectful. He is willing to defer, to be kind, to be thoughtful, courteous. Does this sound like an NBA kind of temperment. It does sound like someone who could be hurt by crude and insensitive remarks. That is my point.

Can't agree more on this: Yao is at least a great Person ! Some fans even don't understand or don't know what is great and what is not. Well, since it is NBA, who cares about the personality of a player? It is just a simple and sad fact. Though I have faith in Yao being great, I guess some fans here will just do something crazy and stupid as what happend in Detroit.

Just because Yao does not respond well to negative reinforcements, if the report is true, does not make him a p*ssy. Some people play harder and better when trying to win more praises versus when trying to avoid criticisms. It's up to the coach to find out how his players best respond and adapt, which I'm afraid Van Gundy seems incapable of doing.

Gary Payton had a really nice video that I saw from Rockets.com about how to be a leader and how to get different guys to respond. He specifically talked about some guys react better to criticism while others really need a pat on the back.

Yao is a wonderful player and in time he will develop the confidence he needs.
