Anyone watching? Bama is up 6-0 going into the half. If Auburn were to lose, how far would they fall in the BCS? Could they fall to number five, thus pushing Texas into fourth, and an automatic BCS at-large bid? If this were possible there would be serious BCS havoc with Cal, Texas, and Utah guaranteed BCS at-large bids for being 3,4, and 6 respectively, but there are only 2 BCS bids to hand out.
No, I don't think it impacts Texas at all if Auburn loses. They're spot goes to the SEC champion, so regardless of what happens today, either Auburn or Tennessee will take up a spot. Texas needs either Cal or Utah to lose for them to move into a BCS bowl. I could be wrong on that, but I'm pretty sure thats how it breaks down.
Nevermind, I just found out that if you're top 4 and from one of the BCS conferences, that you get an automatic birth. So yeah, I think if Auburn loses then Texas would have a shot to move up to #4.
But they only take the top team if there are two at-large teams in the top 4, meaning that Cal would get it over Texas.
Utah is key in this situation. If both Cal and Texas are top 4, they'd be in IF Utah isn't top 6. But since right now the Utes are #6, it's somewhat irrelevant. I'm hoping Cal loses, or looks bad enough that maybe we can somehow leap them in the polls, and the BCS. We don't need either Utah or Cal to lose, but just maybe look bad enough for Texas to move up to 4 over Cal.
And I believe that the non-BCS #6 even takes precedence over BCS #4. I believe Texas could move all the way to #3(Auburn loss to 'Bama, OU loss in Big 12 championship) and still not make it to a BCS game. The two-at large teams would be Cal and Utah. Orange(MNC) - USC vs. Cal Sugar - Miami vs. BC Fiesta - Utah vs. Big 12/SEC/Big 10 Champ Rose - Whichever two teams aren't in the Fiesta(Probably SEC vs. Big 10) Regardless of whether or not Texas should be in a BCS bowl(Guarantee that someone will chime in on this sooner or later), how does the #3 team in the country not make a BCS bowl?
Well Auburn beat Alabama, so we don't have to worry about that unless Auburn loses to Tennessee in the SEC championship, which I believe would just open a whole new can of worms. Anyway, time to start rooting for BYU, and if that fails, Southern Miss in two weeks.
Yup...down to our last two hopes, as Michigan is definitely not going to be passing anyone this week.
Yeah, close game so far, but, seriously, their defense blows. Then again, Utah's offense looks pretty solid. I don't think the UT defense would absoutely stop them in their tracks, but I guarantee they wouldn't have converted on fourth down three times.
