He was trying to think who the other 3 teams were who needs a 3B and 1B and his guesses were the Gaurdians(Paredes would be 1b/DH), Phillies (if they trade Bohm who's been on the block for 2 years now lol) and Padres.

The Pirates only have two players the Astros should be highly interested in acquiring:

    RHP Chandler
    LH OF Florentino

Both are likely hard to get from PIT.

As much as the Astros may be working hard attempting to deal Paredes, it may be an extreme longshot the Astros move him and don’t get hosed.

I would disagree when you take into account Diaz positional value.

What value does Diaz have at catcher? He is defensively one of the worst catchers in baseball.

    WTF is this garbage proposal

Houston Astros trade 3B Isaac Paredes + cash to Pittsburgh Pirates for LHP Hunter Barco, 3B Jared Triolo

Speaking of third basemen, the Pirates are apparently looking for one. They were in on Suarez, matching and willing to exceed the Cincinnati Reds' offer of $15 million, according to reports. The Pirates rank 23rd in projected WAR at third base, with Triolo soaking up most of that projection. Well, the Astros have two third basemen in Paredes and Carlos Correa, and as much as they might try to jam Paredes somewhere into the lineup, he's an awkward fit. If he plays second, that means playing Jose Altuve in left field, which is a terrible idea. If Paredes is DHing, that means playing Yordan Alvarez in left field, which is also a terrible idea. And if he plays first base, you're benching Christian Walker and his $20 million salary.

The Astros already acquired one Pirates starter this offseason in Mike Burrows in a three-team trade with Tampa Bay, but the rotation still has questions beyond Hunter Brown, including Cristian Javier (coming back from injury), Lance McCullers Jr. (his last good season was 2021) and Tatsuya Imai (transitioning from Japan to MLB). Ronel Blanco, Hayden Wesneski and Brandon Walter all underwent Tommy John surgery last season. Barco doesn't possess more than fourth starter upside but would give the Astros another rotation option, while a new-look Pirates infield with Paredes (who has two years of team control remaining and will make about $9 million in 2026), Brandon Lowe, Ryan O'Hearn and perhaps rookie Konnor Griffin would provide Pittsburgh with much more production (the Pirates were 29th in infield OPS in 2025).

What, you don't like trading one of our best bats for an Urias replacement and a pitcher that "doesn't possess more than fourth starter upside"? Sounds like a steal to me

Chandler isn’t going to happen, and I highly doubt the Astros trade Paredes for a minor-league outfielder. They will get something that can start for the big-league team as part of the deal.

The Pirates have three other MLB players that would help the Astros. Bryan Reynolds and Mitch Keller (provided the Pirates eat money to match Paredes’ salary), and Oneil Cruz. Reynolds is a switch hitter that would be the Astros’ best outfielder, Keller is a solid mid-rotation arm who would benefit by playing with a better pitching organization, and Cruz has a lot of untapped talent.

Jared Jones would also be a possibility, but he missed last season after undergoing UCL surgery in May. I wouldn’t give up Paredes for a pitcher coming off elbow surgery, but the Astros might really like him.

Watch him tear it up next year . He was injured and had a bad first half - really came strong in second half and carried the Astros in July/august . What did Yordan do ?

Yordan helped the Astros win a title and is in his 20s. He also achiever more WAR in <200 AB than Walker achieved in >600. Walker's in his mid 30s, and Father Time is undefeated.

Counting on Walker having a "bad start" and his last month or two being what matters sounds a whole lot like Jose Abreu in 2023. Bad season, great in September / October. And then just burnt toast in 2024. The brief resurgence was nothing but a dead cat bounce.

Father time is undefeated, but it doesn't hit everyone at the same time. People have been saying the same thing about Altuve the last few years every time he has a few bad weeks. The Astros let Verlander go under the same premise (multiple times?) only to learn that it turns out he can still pitch. Walker had a bad start to last year - he had an injury in the spring, was adjusting to a new team, etc. But even beyond that, players regularly have bad months or even bad seasons - young and old. It's too early to say whether Walker is in a long-term decline or just had a blip.

And his OBA was .297 during that “resurgence”. He just closed his eyes and hit a few fluky home runs to make the stats look better on the surface.

I’m just saying, if I’m the padres - I’d want a first baseman that mashes in the NLW more than I’d want Goldy.

Reynolds is 31 years old, making 14.25-15.25M a year for the next 5 years, and he is in clear regression. He is projected for 1.3 WAR this year, down from a high of 6.3 in 2021, and an average of 2.4 the last 3 years. This would be atrocious.
