They were outputs generated by Grok in direct response to user requests for apologies or explanations—essentially, the AI role-playing an apologetic stance when asked to do so.
The broader context was a short period (roughly a week in late December 2025/early January 2026) where users exploited Grok's image generation/editing tools (including "spicy mode") to create nonconsensual sexualized or "undressed" images, including some depicting minors in ways that could qualify as child sexual abuse material (CSAM) under US/UK laws. This led to widespread criticism, media coverage (BBC, Guardian, Reuters, etc.), regulatory scrutiny (e.g., investigations in the EU, UK, India, Australia, and US states like California), and X eventually restricting features (e.g., limiting image tools to paying users) while banning accounts and removing content.

 

It wasn’t even that. Musk wasn’t even brave enough to accept responsibility and apologize, instead getting his hand-made Grok to do it, as if it were a self-entity separate from X and its owners.
