The incumbent was cursed by Trump’s endorsement.

While Trump has steadily maintained that “affordability” is a Dem “con job”, the newly elected mayor’s winning message has been to make things more affordable for Miami residents

The conservative-leaning district, which covers parts of Clarke and Oconee counties,
has been under Republican control since 2019.

The winner Gisler previously ran in 2024, but received less than 40% of the vote.
for this special election in 2025, Gisler made affordability a key focus of his campaign, and
was able to get 50.9% of the votes

    a 31 point swing

Democrat Taylor Rehmet won a special election for the Texas state Senate on Saturday, flipping a reliably Republican district that President Donald Trump won by 17 points in 2024.

Rehmet, a labor union leader and veteran, easily defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss, a conservative activist, in the Fort Worth-area district. With almost all votes counted, Rehmet had a comfortable lead of more than 14 percentage points.

"This win goes to everyday working people," Rehmet told supporters.

I had no idea about this election or who this dude was, so I’m interested in learning about how he ran his campaign and what his messaging was

He's not all that impressive as a candidate from what I've seen of him. He's not bad in how he presents by any means, but he isn't the kind of guy you run through a brick wall for. He's an air force vet, an airplane mechanic and a big union guy. He kind of has an upscale working class vibe. By no means is he a firebrand or a radical - talks alot about families and coming together as a country.

It's just that Republicans have made THEIR brand that toxic.

Any Dem that wasn't a kiddie diddler, an uncomfortably brown person, trans or anything else that offended "moderate" Ft Worth sensibilities was poised to clean up. They just needed a guy who could show up, not stick his foot in his mouth and look like he belonged in the district.

Yeah, angry people show up for odd, out-of-cycle elections. I'm happy to see the result, but would not claim dramatic upheaval in the greater voting populace.

this is arguably the main reason he won

republicans also rigged the new TX maps for the midterms under the assumption that they had the Hispanic vote on lock, then proceeded to make it so they can’t leave home without their papers

Latinos got their wake up call…you don’t lie in bed with a white supremacist party thinking you’re safe and they’ll accept you, they want all of you brown people out of here

They should disband Gerrymandering all together. Give the % based totals per state that amount of representatives for congress. Common sense.

Could backfire. Expanding the map weakens the base. It works in a neutral year, but backfires in a wave year.
