So 9-5 Duke and Notre Dame would have been in this year. Miami and I guess JMU would have been out? Is that better? Also: SEC: we want 16 teams B10: we want 16 teams but also 24 eventually Fine, let's stay at 12. These people are brilliant.
Yup but getting them to give up a CFP spot to ND only to fight each other and get nothing is comical.
4 P4 conference champs 1 G6 conference champ ND, UT, GA, Bama, OSU, LSU, ??? Guaranteed if they're ranked in the top-20
This is 100% on Petitti and the B1G. They decided to make everyone suffer (including themselves) by not compromising and moving to 16 teams unconditionally. One small thing I agree with Petitti on is eliminating conference championship games. Greg Sankey of the SEC intimidated the CFP committee into agreeing conference championship game losers would not have the loss affect their CFP chances. That is nonsense! The problem is Petitti only wants to do this if the playoff increases to 24 teams.
Let's just keep it a 12 and go back to the computer system with each of the power 4 getting an automatic bid.
I think everyone involved in college football sucks, but I think it's funny that people were up in arms over a top-25 JMU getting in because it wasn't "the 12 best teams" so they changed the system to allow an unranked 9-5 Duke team in.
The ACC has already changed their tiebreaker rules beginning this year to prevent another crazy Duke fluke. It is still unlikely but theoretically possible for a 4-loss team to sneak into a conference championship game by losing 2 or 3 non-conference games. I'm with you on CFB overall. I watch the NFL, but despise the organization itself and CFB is now in that same position for me.
I know I'm in the minority, but I actually didn't have a problem with the ACC tiebreaker rules. The issue with Duke was simply that they sucked in non-conference games, but those should be irrelevant to who wins a conference. There's no good solution when you have 5 teams with 2-losses, so they tried to measure ACC schedule strength as best they could and Duke got favored there. They got a legit opponent in Virginia and beat them and won the ACC fairly, I thought. But JMU and Tulane (who beat Duke head-to-head) were better teams and deserved the spot in the CFP more. I thought the system worked exactly as it should with just picking the 4 top ranked conference champions. Instead, the ACC is likely to change their tiebreaker to account for non-conference results, which seems like an awful solution. The real problem is that the conferences are too big so no one plays comparable schedules so five teams going 6-2 all had wildly different schedules and can't actually be compared against each other. This same problem is going to hit the SEC and B10 in other years too.
Miami only got into the CFP because they played and beat ND. A&M would have been a borderline CFP team without their win over Notre Dame - only 1 loss, but no other wins against any good team. They'd have definitely been out with a 2nd loss if they didn't have the ND win.
Let ND play the Colorado States and Memphises 12 times every year. Nobody *has* to play ND in the future
Of course nobody has to play them. Teams want to play them. It helps the team, brings in money, its great for the fans, etc. It doesn't even help anyone to not play them - ND just goes 12-0 and makes the playoff every year in that scenario.
There's ~30 other historically great teams that get you the same gloss. **** ND. **** Penn State too. **** Miami...until oops this year
Neither JMU or Duke would have won anything so it really doesn't matter that much other than preventing a team like Texas who could have upset one of the bigger teams since they won 2 games against teams in the playoffs and kept it close against Ohio State. Like I said earlier, let's guarantee spots for the power 4. Maybe SEC and Big1 gets 2 guaranteed spots and take the top 6-10 remaining teams based on computer rankings like the old BCS system.
At the end of the day, this is a business to the conferences. They want to be in the games to make money for their schools and conference. Everyone is looking out for themselves.
Guaranteeing 2 spots instead of 1 for the SEC and B1G would accomplish nothing, other than to make them demand 4 instead. Guaranteeing each P4 champ one spot is all they should do. My only other request is conference championship games should be either eliminated (best case) or the loser should not be protected by the CFP committee.
