Oglala Sioux president walks back claims of DHS pressure, member arrests

The president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe has walked back claims he made in a memo and press release earlier this week that immigration enforcement arrested four tribal members and that the federal government tried to extract an “immigration agreement” out of the tribe in return for information about their members’ whereabouts.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it can’t verify claims that any of their officers arrested or “even encountered” members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe or found anyone in their detention centers claiming to be a tribal member. They denied asking the tribe for any kind of agreement.

P.S. As for the AP article you linked, the walk-back was mainly about the agreement, not the arrests. But that’s not even the point. It flew right over your head.

This whole thing is such an own goal by the Trump admin. The Canadians not only introduced 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs at the request of the Biden administration but Canada has had to swallow retaliatory agriculture tariffs in response. And we've done all of that stuff because Canada historically has aligned its foreign policy with the US.

But Trump has so thoroughly threatened and pissed off Canada that the Canadian government is now re-engaging with China. So you can mock Canada but the government here has to find new relationships beyond the US. Our whole economy has been built around exporting to the US and clearly that dependence serves no value if the US is going to continually antagonize Canada and other allies.

So bravo to the Trump admin. You've basically destroyed one of Reagan's signature accomplishments (free trade with Canada) and sent your closest ally looking for new friends.

What security deal did Canada make with China? It was explicitly a trade deal (lower tariffs on EVs in exchange for lowering tariffs on Canadian agriculture).
