Nash played in a different era and was more focused on getting the best out of his teammates. Prime Nash with the green light in this era will be second only to Steph when it comes to 3s. Just too many Gen Alpha’s who never watched him play thinking he’s not generational.

The % doesn’t bother me as much as the timidness . If it was lower and he was chucking more I would be reassured it would normalize

Being afraid to shoot? Gtfo no space here for that

Fatboy/racist/AustinICE agent always plays the same Internet caricature. Be his insulting racist Big itself. Die on any Hill that is a logical and then semi apologize after two or three hours of jerking off on the Internet.

rinse and repeat for approximately the next 3 to 5 years.

    his defense really concerns me

always gambling for steals and getting blown by by any player with the bare minimum when it comes to perimeter skills

seems like the type to get hunted in a playoff series

I Look at Reed like Manu Ginobli, he was a guy that was just different, but good different.

Even Popovich had to let him just be him.

I feel if Ime just let Reed do his STOCKS stuff and try to play a little more traditional D, he would soar.

Reed should be leaned into, he is a great shooter, not a good one a great one, and he plays disruptive off kilter defense which is a major advantage, let him ROAM and get Stocks and get a CENTER that can actually protect the basket, and the team will be better and his confidence will be fine.

He is a special player who just needs to not be looking over his back at the MICROMANAGER on our bench.

I think that looking at his impact stuff and his flashes (the flashes is really what you're looking for with a young guy, reed is at 1600 minutes for his career) and saying he's not a core player is not a reasonable take. That does not mean he WILL end up being a star or a core player, but looking at the current data it's not reasonable to say that. If someone looked at rookie Jalen Green and said he doesn't look like a core player, i would consider that to be unreasonable and based only on hate. He's someone who turned out to be a bust, but at that point it was not a reasonable opinion to have. Reed's metrics and everything obviously blow jalen out of the water, so he's levels ahead even though he's still played fewer minutes than rookie jalen, but the idea is the same to me.

Reed is just a weird profile of player.

High 3P% + 3PAr, elite defensive hands and turnover economy, great offensive processing, strong vertical leap combined with stiff hips, very limited handle, inability to beat or stay in front of a man 1v1, poor size/strength/lateral movement, and terrible first step.

It's tough to pattern match him to anyone, so watching him your brain is like "is this guy really good or does he kinda suck?".

IMO he's kind of a moneyball player. The set of things he's good at are more important to net rating than they intuitively should be, and the things he's bad at less so. But the impact metrics didn't lie in college and they don't lie now.

Pick 6's, 9 3PA per 36 at 40%, frequent outlet passes for layups, and PnR skip passing for corner 3's affect the scoring margin more than getting blown by on the perimeter 10 times a game. But the latter makes a guy look like a high schooler who doesn't belong out there.

(tbh, the Rockets have a lot of moneyball-type players... it's kind of our FO's thing, but maybe not Ime's).

    Report from the Bulls game:

What a weird game. 25 minutes for Davison, 22 for Sheppard, 13 for Okogie, zero for Holiday. I’m fine with Ime trying out different lineups, given the recent losses, but this was pretty extreme. Especially when the Bulls took a timeout with a little over a minute left, I was sure Ime would sub Okogie for JD. Instead he left him in, and Huerter promptly abused JD for a bucket.

All those minutes for JD gave an opportunity for some perspective on what Reed brings and doesn’t bring. What struck me was how damn short Reed’s arms are. JD was no better than Reed with his feet (actually, worse — he gave up some ridiculous blow-bys, including two around the baseline because he didn’t even position himself correctly). But when JD contested a shot, his hand was in the picture, which underscored how sad it is that Reed can’t reach that far. Reed relies entirely on hops, and if he doesn’t guess right, he’s ineffectual or he’s fouling.

Reed has not gotten back to the energy level he had in the Suns and Blazers games. He was OK in this one, but as previously discussed, given his size, his OK level is not adequate for the NBA. One example was in the 4th when he got screened on one side, I think by Huerter, then had to rotate across the court to cover the open man, which was Okoro. Reed tried to half-jog it, and the result was that the pass got there before he did, so he was off balance and Okoro went around him, forcing a foul. I think Ime pulled him not long after that.

I know some of y’all think Reed is totally in the doghouse and Ime is being unfair to him. I’m skeptical. The first play of the 4th was a screen to set up Reed for a 3. Then soon after that, KD drew a double and passed back to Reed for another open 3. Reed was short on both of them. I don’t know if it’s physical or mental, but both of those were open looks and nobody but Reed caused the misses. Which isn’t the end of the world; every shooter misses shots. But when Jabari is cold, he still helps us a lot with good switchable defense and rebounds. Reed doesn’t.

The one thing I will pin on Ime is that some of our defensive lapses in this game were confusion among the players because of unfamiliar roles. Especially when Reed and JD were both in the game, one of them had the job at the top of the zone, so the other one was on switching duty from the back and sometimes blew an assignment. Personally, I’m willing to live with some of this confusion for the sake of trying out different lineups, because it’s clear from the road trip that we need some new answers.

The other thing I came away with after watching 25 minutes of JD is that much as I admire that guy for giving us a spark and some decent distribution, there were many times when I wished Okogie had been on the court instead. Okogie’s defense on and off the ball is so good, I think he could have taken away another 5 or 6 buckets in this game, and we would have all breathed easier.

Yeah I went to the Mavs game here in Dallas, and had seats by the entrance to the locker rooms. I know ya'll hate to talk about it but guys... Reed is just really really small for the NBA. His draft measurements are not accurate one bit. I still think he belongs in the NBA at the very least as a streak shooter off the bench and really hope he develops enough over the Spring and Summer to be the shoe-in starting PG next season, but man... that defense with his size is sooo hard to overcome in the NBA.

My 11 year old daughter even said "who is that little boy on the Rockets... he looks like someone in my grade."

Not sure if there's anything he can do about his size, but in his development over the Summer I think the only chance he has at fulfilling his potential is to like spend the Summer with Chris Paul or something and just develop the worlds greatest handle, and unlock eagle eye court vision and passing.

Seeing in person especially Gafford for the Mavs just made me scratch my head why we just don't have anyone that can match up with that type of size except for Adams who can barely jump over a phone book at this point. Dude definitely looks jacked as hell in person though I will say that.

I have wondered about Reed Sheppard's height. I'm a little over 6 feet. Shep is listed at 6'2". That's about my measurement in my New Balance super-duper foam whatever sneakers. For a while I thought, Maybe Shep looks 6'2" because he's a little white boy surrounded by big bros. But boy ain't no 6'2". And, yes, he does have the alligator arms.

Codman says a lot of teams are calling for Reed. In another post he says Reed is nigh on untouchable. I guess we'll see how this all shakes out. It is for sure we still need a starting point guard and until one is acquired we are a speed bump in the playoffs at best.

"Adams who can barely jump over a phone book." I had to Google that: What is a phone book?

Very good assessment. I’ve never understood why Ime started limiting Okogie’s role. I think he should have stayed in the starting lineup and Reed could have still got his 20-25 minutes. It’s hard to build synergy with a unit with all this experimentation. I still don’t get it when we have two offense only guys in the backcourt at the same time. It didn’t make sense with Holiday and Reed and it doesn’t make sense with JD and Reed either. I think the limited success of the two bigs lineup and all the media attention it got went to Ime’s head and he is been throwing sh*t against the wall ever since. With his limited offensive acumen, he should just go back to traditional roles and rotations.

If that were true, people would be touting him as a star, Reed's biggest issue is figuring out when to shoot, Jimmer was always shooting.

The things I worry about with Reed, just from my perspective. Reed relies a lot on his athleticism. Elevation on his jumper and quick with his hands. I do like how he shoots, but worry that once he starts getting older, when does the decline happen and his athleticism is no longer giving him the tools he needs to be an NBA player. He is short and his athleticism is what makes him an NBA player at the moment. Im not saying he can't evolve to an NBA player that can be useful. He is just not my franchise point guard. I dont even really think he's a point guard. He's more of a shooting guard. He comes off of pick and roles and picks up his dribble more than often when they pressure him. He is not confident in his ball handling ability right now and you can tell. I think a play that kind of sealed Reed's fate for me on this team, was against the Kings. He was obviously holding Derozen on a switch. I saw him watch Derozen flash across the paint, ft line area and Derozen gets an and 1 jumper because Reed for some reason got lost and attempted to block the shot. You are 6"1 and you were late. He could of easily fought on defense before the shot, but didnt do it. After that Udoka took him out of the game, and he was watching the rest of the game. Reed glues himself to the bench. I think a lot of people on this forum doesn't realize that. He needs to take some accountability for his mistakes. I know he's young and there are growing pains, but Reed has had plenty of time to adjust and quit doing the same stuff over and over again. I want Reed to succeed in this league, I just dont know if he's a piece I build my franchise around.

Maybe Stone forced Ime's hand a little: "Get DFS out there so he can get back into form."
Translation: "Show the league proof of life regarding DFS so I can hopefully include him in a trade."

Core player is subjective just like franchise player. It is a reasonable take to say he is a core player and it’s a reasonable take to say he is not. We need shooting and Reed supplies that, so right now his contribution is important to this team. If all he ever is is a good 3 point shooter he is replaceable by any number of SG’s in the league. We have 4 guys on our team that are shooting close to 40% from 3 on the season. When he demonstrates more than that one skillset on a consistent basis then he might earn a starting role and I might consider him core. That is not hate, it is an objective opinion. I want him to succeed. I think the “hater” label is used way too much on clutchfans and in society in general.

Lol. Also side note on Adams (love the guy but) - he has to have the worst percentage in the NBA below the rim on put back attempts. I don't know why Ime doesn't just mandate him passing back out when he gets an offensive rebound.

But on Reed and PG needs - As skeptical as I am on the guy, and his size for the NBA to be a full time starter - I do think him working out is out best case scenario because of the price tag to go get a guy. I mean even a guy who isn't really himself even a true PG in like a Jrue Holiday costs what... 32 mil the next few seasons??... This team doesn't need THAT much from a PG, but they desperately need what a standard NBA PG can do in being able to bring the ball up with pace, limit turnovers getting the initial passing going to setup our main scorers, hit the open 3's, and defend against the quicker guards in the league.

Right now his shaky handle has improved even from the start of the season, and I like his ability to his open 3's. I think he can improve as a facilitator for what we need, but that might take some more experience. The big question mark is that defense, and I just don't know with his size.

I would be pretty surprised if teams were really burning up Stone's phone about Reed, but wouldn't be surprised if he is included in bigger deal if Stone makes one... which i doubt he will do. I think if Stone is acquiring a true star player, it's likely Sengun that's the big piece out, and if its just as a patchwork replacement for FVV till next year, I think it's more likely he goes bargain hunting for a veteran, and tries to keep Reed.

We'll see. I think the deal they REALLY want to make but don't want to make it public is Giannis for Sengun. Sengun is a true young star, but as a starting center on an Ime cultured team, I can see them wanting to use him as the centerpiece to get Giannis.... but I could be wrong. That's just where my head is at.

Sure, but he's also shown way more than just being a shooter. Some of his passing has been awesome, his off the dribble stuff (like the warriors game) has looked special. He might never get there (like jalen), but there's no actual objective reason to say he's not a core player based on what he's shown. We only really have 2 guys who shoot near 40%, okogie is low volume and does not get guarded AT ALL, he basically gets treated like a center and tari never plays so he barely counts. Reed and KD are the only 2 players that teams really care about not leaving open.
