I used to look at all the change in the pit below the ride when i was upside down. Wasn't that right next to the remote-control boats?
I still hear the three beeps in my head from the Sky Screamer. Anyone else do the penny trick where you put the penny on your knee and it would drop at a different rate and float?? I always thought that was so cool. Also when it first opened the Batman Escape had maybe the best ride queue of any ride I’ve ever road. Of course after awhile they couldn’t keep it up and didn’t want to AC the entire cave so it didn’t last but when it first opened I’d put that queue up against anything Disney has in terms of immersion.
That was the looping starship. I was never a fan of that ride because I thought we would get stuck upside down. I have so many great memories of that park. From the days it didnt storm when it was supposed to and you could ride everything quickly to cooling off by standing in front of tidal wave or under the waterfall at thunder river. The opening years of XLR8 and greased lightning were unforgettable. I feel bad that kids today or even yesterday don't get to experience the joy.
I remember when XLR8, Viper, Ultra Twister, and Tidal Wave were each introduced as the newest attractions at the time of their opening
I forgot to mention my brother used to smoke mad week on the sky car forgot what they were called, from the Alpine village to the Oriental village. He would run to get on there.
When I was a kid, my dad took me on my first roller coaster (Excalibur?) there. It was the one that predated the Cyclone right on 610. As we were going around the corkscrew at the bottom, my favorite Astros hat flew off. From then on, whenever we would drive by it on the south loop, my dad would say "Ah, I think I see your hat!"
So many memories, but one that always stood out and blew my 8yr old mind was a show they had called "Movie Magic". The show was about sound effects in movies and how they made them. I forgot most of how sounds like rain and thunder were made but I specifically remember sound of a single gun shot. When they showed us it was just a piece of 2x4 piece of wood slapping another 2x4 piece of wood, I didnt believe it. Then they played the movie clip and everything sounded exactly how they explained it. I was amazed and confused all at the same time.
I kind of remember that. I think it was in the theatre where you laid on the floor and watched the movie on the ceiling. I remember being a kid and absolutely loving the River of No Return.
This guy I went to Astroworld with blew black pepper in my eyes (think a nice handful and just puff right in) while we were seated eating at one of the restaurant spots. I guess he thought it was funny. It wasn't. I literally could not open my eyes for hours, I couldn't see and was being led around like a blind person, my eyes were constant burning/watering, and the only relief I got was from the wind rush riding on the rollercoasters. Literally had my eyes leaking water trying to clean themselves. It was a bad scene. I never really forgave that guy for that. Just did it for no reason. On retrospect, I probably should have been taken to the medical station where I could hopefully get a proper flush. I guess I was too delirious to make that call and my friends were too stupid to take me there.
lol we would smoke cigarettes on those gondolas. We would steal the novelty cigarettes from the gift shop, each in a “in case of emergency break glass” vial, and then smash them on the metal floors of the sky cars, perfect timing for two 12 year olds with season passes and no supervision to share one single stolen cigarette!
No but one prank we would play was at a different park (Worlds of Fun in KC). The cars were "jeeps" and you'd ride through the woods. We'd get 2 separate jeeps and catch up with the front driver. Once you got deep into the woods, you'd stop and lift the 2nd car and turn it around on the track. Then quickly hop into the 1st car and proceed. Sit back on the bench and watch people walking out of the woods was a classic! It might take a couple of turns to make sure you had a big enough gap between the 2nd and 3rd car but it was worth it.
