I think it's both coaching and personnel. Injuries depleted our personnel. Coaching philosophy is mostly risk aversion. ISO is the most "controlled" form of offense with very few moving parts. But a lot of it is our cold shooting. It's not that we lacked open shots. The difference between this long stretch of bad games and earlier in the season is that we were able hit shots earlier. Now we keep missing. I mean, look at those sequences when we got a ton of offensive rebounds with the opposing defense scrambling, we still miss all those wide open shots. Hopefully it's just a long shooting slump for a number of our players.
Reed tries to make something happen with the ball. But when he fails to beat his man, he just gives up. Sometimes he picks up the dribble and looks for bail out. Sometimes he backs out the looks to pass to either Durant of Sengun, or anybody. That's lack of confidence. A good PG would keep his dribble and try to find other openings to get the offense going.
Yes and no, I don't think he has a lack of confidence, I don't believe he is used to being the SOLE responsible person for attacking the basket yet - he has always played a system with multiple attackers, he is NOT a guy that is selfish and will push it, he makes the SAFE play, when we actually need him to PUSH it and create for himself more often. He just needs time, and MUCH LESS MICROMANAGMENT by IME .....he has to get the same consideration to clean up his mistakes that KD gets, that Alpi gets, that Amen gets that Bari gets......Ime is ****ing REED UP. DD
In the G league Reed was super aggressive with his shot and his handle. He lacks confidence on this level. He passes up open threes and Amen jokingly threatened to punch him in the face for doing so. Some guys you need to reign in, some you need to light a fire under.
Defenses being physical with him is not his problem. He's one of the most heavily guarded players in the NBA, but unlike Green, he's been efficient except recently. His efficiency problem is mostly just shooting poorly. On picks, sure, Reed should get picks on the ball. He's a PnR PG, and PnR is still the bread and butter of the NBA outside of Houston. His PnR looks close. Granted, he's not generally playing with three shooters when he's on-ball. On Durant, I don't have a problem with Durant and Reed on the court together. I have a problem with them being on the court together, and it has been predetermined that the ball has to go to Durant even if the defense completely sells out trying to stop that pass.
I think that's just that he's usually the SG so his instincts are to pass back to the PG when he doesn't have his lane or space. His instinct isn't "keep the ball moving, that probing didn't work, what's the next plan" which is not uncommon for smaller guards who are having to move to the point due to size, less so that their skill set is that of a classic PG. He just needs more reps I think and to get used to being the person who's creating the movement so he can't be the one who stops it dead.
What some of you fail to understand is that although Reed might be extremely undersized and horrible at defense, he has those qualities you just can’t teach. First to the gym, last out the gym, real student of the game, real gym rat, high motor, brings his lunch pail to work, gritty, blue collar type guy.
And a generational shooting talent. We literally should be building around him, Amen and Sengun..... DD
Generational is laying it on pretty thick. Even if he is a “generational shooter” teams aren’t built around such players. JJ Reddick, Kyle Korver, and many others have career 3p% over 40%. It takes more than that specific skillset to be built around. Let’s give Reed a bit more time to develop before declaring him a core player after a 20 game hot streak as a rotational role player. Clearly this team needs to build around Amen and Sengun, Reed hasn’t proven himself to that extent. Hell, there’s plenty of guys that think we should trade Amen and Sengun who are way ahead of Sheppard in their development.
Tell that to Curry....and Nash, and CP3...and ...and..and... See, I can Cherry pick players too, but mine aren't all white guys....careful your bias is showing. DD
They all do way more than shoot. That was the point. Screw you on the racial part, it was more about guys that were used as instant offense guys. I like Reed, but he has done nothing to prove he is a generational talent, even at shooting after 40 games in the rotation. Guys that throw around the race card where it doesn’t apply do a disservice to the cause of equality.
Generational shooters don't struggle to shoot the way Reed does. He's not close to that level of 3pt shooter in truth, it's only 1 season of college, the rest of the time he was good but not great, that's high school and NBA. Hopefully this season is a return to college form and not an awakening that he's just a decent shooter tbh. He's flashing plenty now, but so did Jalen and look where that went. I'm concerned, so far it's looking like only Amen might live up to being a top 4 pick, and even he might be a severely limited player if his shot doesn't come around.
Reed is doing great but has a coach that is **** for him development wise, you have been a hater of him for a long time As for racism, Methinks thou doth protesteth too much. It is ok to compare skills without considering skin color - will give you another shot, who would you compare Reed to as a 21 year old....from the past? DD
People like DD have ruined the internet. Much like people of that age didn’t set America up properly for those coming after them. Entitled white people. What a joke. he will sit there and die on Kevin Porter Hill while casually calling a valued member of the BBS racist. Useless. I am sure he spends 10 hours a day on Facebook in addition to the 10 hours a day on the board.
Steve Nash year 2: 22mpg 9.1ppg 45.9FG% 41.5 3pt Kobe Bryant Year 2 26mpg 15.4ppg 42.8% FG 34.1% 3pt Kyle Lowry Year 2 25.5mpg 9.6 PPG 43% FG 25% 3pt Chauncey Billups year 2 25.4mpg 11.1ppg 39%FG 33.9%3pter I can go on and ****ING ON ........it is year two he is 21 years old.......and he has a LOUSY coach for development or trust. Reed is right on track to be fine, and if anyone would pull their head out of their ass and actually do some historic research they could see it....same for Jabari, and Amen...and Sengun. DD
