He isn't playing poorly at all - he shot 40% on 3s last night, he was 3/8 overall - what he isn't getting is the screens for his quick moves into a shot.

And he played a lot of minutes OFF the ball with JD last night.

Ime needs to embrace development - he doesn't have 15 - thirty year olds on the team, the majority of his core is 22 and under.

There are key differences. Bigger sample size with Jabari being bad, worse shooting, doesn't handle the ball or create (something this team lacks) which Reed provides, etc.

Edit: Also not advocating for Reed to have 'carte blanche'; though he does need more leash to develop. But at the very least closing the gap between the 2's minutes would be nice. I believe Reed needs minimum of 30 per night.

He's playing more poorly than before. I watched the game last night and he did little besides shooting. 8 shots in 22 minutes is almost exactly his normal per minute shot volume. Two games prior he had 21 shot attempts. The shots are there, but what about the rest of his game?

Reed's game feel is off recently. He had a wide open three in the corner that he passed up on and it led to an ugly possession. The commentators even said he should have shot it. What did Amen say he would do if Reed passed up an open shot again? Reed played in the 4th quarter and on one possession dribbled the ball around until five seconds left on the shot clock before getting it to KD. We settled for a tough shot and a miss.

Whether someone played well or poorly is more than about shooting 40% on threes.

He was playing OFF the ball, you do realize that, right?

Sometimes you just have to use your brain man. Just sit and think for a bit. It’s really not that difficult and will save you the time it takes to type up a wall of text. Often questions you have are answered just several posts above

This guy still doesn’t understand garbage time.

It’s ok thought he’ll eventually understand how BTC works too

He needs to play off the ball most of the time. Last night he was ok, but still passed on a couple of wide open shots and on one instance, that got him removed from the game, he was dribbling around the half court line until 9 seconds in the shot clock and handed it to Durant. I do agree that he needs to continue to get 20-25 minutes a game and should have started in the Sacramento game. He has lost some of his aggressiveness lately. I don’t know whether that is a result of Ime or because he hasn’t been shooting well or defenses have made adjustments. If we stand pat, we desperately need him to step up as a backup combo guard.

How is that relevant? A player can play well or poorly off the ball. Ryan Anderson played off the ball and shot 40% from deep here, that doesn't mean he played great. Reed played largely off the ball at UK and was fantastic. He's not playing great now and I gave you some examples of mistakes he made last night.

If you think he's playing great then good on you. I know he's better than this.

    This.

Seems pretty rational to me that an undersized guard in his sophomore season would be making more mistakes than his teammates and that those mistakes might be a bit more egregious. Coaches don't bench players for shooting slumps.

It means he looks different when he is not initiating, his role is to be the shooter, not the facilitator, and it does take time when your role is consistently changing to find the niche for each.

He is a great shooter, playing him off the ball while he learns how to attack more on the bounce is exactly what he should be doing, and at times, he should be facilitating and hunting his own shot on a PnR from the top.

Reed is doing fine, he is a 21 year old kid in his 2nd year that is learning the toughest position to play, look at his numbers in comparison to some all time greats like Nash in his 2nd year...they compare favorably.

I like that Ime has finally started to play JD, having TWO ball handlers on the floor at once makes our team much harder to guard.

Reed needs to shoot when he's open. And he needs to work on shooting when he's not completely open, too. He looks like he is often scared that he will get blocked.

His 3 pt% by month: Oct (only 4 games) 36%, Nov 47%, Dec 38%, Jan (7 games) 31%. Hopefully by the end of this month it will be close to 40%. But I'm greedy and I want him to shoot better than 40.4% on 3's he is at now.

Reed should be a volume 3 point shooter at 42-44% minimum for the season. I mean if players like Monk and Ware and Hachimura can shoot 42.3%, 42.5% and 44.2% then Reed can do that or better. I don't want excuses about how the defense is keying in on Reed. They are doing this but they do that to every player they fear from 3. He has to figure out how to be successful with that D. It would help if there were plays run for him but that doesn't really happen on our team, unfortunately.

I do think his floater and middie jumper game look good but I haven't looked at the numbers yet. I know he doesn't score well at the rim.

Yes, but that is the case for every Rocket. I'm fine with Reed not being the top or even 2nd guy out there when he's playing with the other playmakers on the team.

He does need developmental reps on-ball, especially when he's tasked with playing mostly with bench players.

Reed is a great shooter. His major problem is he can be guarded by one player. That is why it is important to run plays for him, because the only way he produces spacing or provides gravity is shooting the ball. Until he can beat his man consistently off the dribble, he is a specialist off the bench like Kyle Korver or that type of player.

bari certainly has his limitations - not gonna deny that... but imo, he showed some progress to start the year and provided reasonable minutes for his position up until the last couple of weeks....
Reed has been more hit and miss... he looked like crap to start the year... then he looked phenomenal... and then he regressed.... Maybe it is Ime that has shook Reed - idk... Personally, i prefer Reed as 6th man... he seems to play much better when he feels the necessity to score rather than questioning if he should defer to KD or Sengun...

Reed is a rhythm player. The more jacks he puts up the more effective he is. When your shot is pure you usually hit your averages. Don’t have to look any further than KD as an example of this.

Reed is too often passing up the 3pt coming off a screen because it's a bit tight with the defender. He's got to raise up and shoot those and I think he will as time goes along.

If you don't want excuses, don't imply two guys that arent guard heavily off-ball are guarded like Reed is guarded off-ball. I will say Monk is feared like Reed.

Reed is 18th in the NBA in his 3point percentage being better than his expected 3 point percentage. Curry, Edwards, Porter, Jokic, Maxey, and Simons are the only ones better with a more difficult shot expectancy.

Reed has made mistakes and hasn't been as good as his hot stretch earlier this season, but people are losing the plot a little bit with the idea that he hasn't earned an everyday role as at least a 25 mpg 6th man, with the on-ball opportunity to match.

18/5/4/2/1 per 36 on 58% TS, +1.2 EPM, 3:1 AST/TO, positive on/off swing on both offense and defense for a +8 team, no significant opponent shooting luck, 91st percentile in RAPM... for a 21yo guard? You have to seriously be missing the forest for the trees to want him riding the pine for a few mistakes.

We give defenses really only three things to worry about: Rim attempts, KD jump shots, and Reed threes. Defenses are fine giving up everything else we create, bc it's not efficient. Remove Reed from the equation, and now it's just "trap KD and pack the paint" the whole game. Easy gameplan.

I agree with this. He does need development reps on-ball. I think he is better on-ball without Durant on the floor and with picks being set for him. I do think defenses responded to his stellar play and, as I predicted, are being very physical with him. It is something he is going to have to overcome to be an effective PG. I’m not sure that we can afford the number of reps to make that happen this year, so they should be using lots of picks when he is on ball. It can’t be just with Adams, because Adams is not good at the rolling part of the PnR, because of his poor hands. I’m not sure, why they haven’t developed the same PnR game with Sengun and Reed or Amen, as they spammed us with last year.
