Was Correa the right player to go over the luxury tax for?

Discussion in 'Houston Astros' started by strosb4bros, Jul 31, 2025.

?

Going over lux tax for Correa

  1. Yes, he will make a difference

  2. No, he's a negative WAR player who will take up field space when Paredes returns

  3. No, he won't make enough of a difference

First of all calling Correa a "marginally positive player" is ridiculous. According to Fangraphs, he was the 42nd most valuable player in all of MLB after the trade deadline and projects him to be the 5th most valuable 3B in 2026.

Secondly, Paredes and Pena were both injured when that trade happened. Mauricio Dubon and Zach Short were the starting left side of the infield. To say the infield was stacked is also ridiculous.

Back to the point of this thread, Correa was absolutely A right player to go over the CBT for.

The problem is that a SP was ALSO needed.

The team was more than just one player away so the idea that getting Correa without also adding a SP was a bad decision is certainly valid.

Really? You might not agree with him but he does make valid points. I think “troll” is overused.

The Correa deal has its detractors. If he performs well and stays healthy, those detractors will be proven wrong. If he isn’t a difference maker and/or misses lots of games, the detractors will have been correct. If Paredes was healthy, the Astros don’t trade for Correa last year. Well, Paredes is healthy now and the infield situation is a bit awkward.

Everyone here is hoping that it shakes out well for the Astros.

Most projections have Correa as somewhere around a 3 fWAR player next season...that's a fringe All Star. No one has Paredes as a 3.0 fWAR player next season.

I'm perfectly fine with bringing him back and if doing so allows us to move Paredes for something the team needs more, even better.

I do. 3.2 to be exact. 145 games started.

That's fine, I think that's plausible if he plays that many games for only the second time in his career... but that still has him roughly the equivalent of Correa if Correa plays 120 games or so.

Correas contract is over 30 milllion a year for the next 3 seasons. He is 31 years old and declining in all aspects of his game.
Paredes contract is over 9 million a year for the next 2 seasons. He is 28 years old and is ascending. He will hit and field better than Correa over the length of his contract and is a candidate for a three year extension.

Based on the fact that he has not been assigned to his position as Correa is there.

Correa's contract is not 30 mil for the next three seasons.
It's a little over 21 mil the next three seasons.

It would be a bad decision if Paredes wasn't in the lineup everyday if healthy. Especially if he is spitting on and fouling off pitches like he has in the past.

    It's not.

    He's not.

    It's not.

    He's not.

He might or might not be. His best season so far was 2023.

    No one actually knows this.
