Indeed…. It’s just not standard practice to pair a first-time play-calling coordinator with a young QB. I would be thrilled to see the litany of examples in history where this worked out in the NFL. My guess is there is maybe 1 or 2 specific cases out there over the last 20-30 years, and the only one that’s specifically coming to mind is the MIke Martz-Warner combo from 1999.
I'd have been happy with a Mike McCarthy hiring, & that type. That's like "exactly" what the team needed. I think Chip Kelly would have worked out better with the Texans than Raiders. Raiders got better on D with Carroll, but just dont have anything on offense past Bowers. People said that Demeco didn't want to be "threatened" by an experienced coach. I sure hope that's not the case lol, or this franchise isn't for real
Kelly was earning $6M as OC in Vegas; Cap was making $M 6M as HC in Htine] Edit: some sources say Cap got humped to $8M
Yes? The offense is garbage lol, why keep it around? If we lose in the playoffs because we can't score more than 14 points then Caley should be fired. I would hire Mike in a minute. I love coordinators that have experience being a head coach and he seems to be pretty creative and thinks outside of the box which is what we need. We need someone that isn't so stubborn doing the same thing over and over, someone that looks at a player like Woody Marks and goes "Gee, this guy can really catch the ball, lets try to get him involved in more passing plays." instead of running him up the middle all game long like they didn't just draft one of the best receiving backs in some time.
I’m definitely on board but that probably means we lose in the Wild Card or maybe divisional round again.
Slowik was McDaniels passing game coordinator this season. Does slowik get to come back as passing game coordinator under OC McDaniel? Thats seems like it would be very akward.
Here comes all of the WCO guys. Caley has done a good job this yr considering the OL issues that have been somewhat fixed and the lack of Mixon or a blocking TE. The team won 12 games with Marks as a full time RB and probably would've won 2-3 more if Mixon could've played but yeah lets fire Caley and give CJ 3 new OC's in 3 yrs. (Brilliance)
[Wilson] Texans QB C.J. Stroud on OC Nick Caley, 'have a lot of love for that guy, has done a heck of a job for us' notes how people are in a 'microwave' expectation, but football is a 'crockpot'
The Texans have literally improved every possible offensive metric* from last year - + won 2 more games - and...... Caley is a "failure"? * except running & red zone, and there's a pretty obvious reason.
The offense is.... "garbage"? That seems a bit... extreme. It's obviously possible the texans only score 14 and lose. But they haven't scored less than 20 points since November 16, and it hasn't happened with a fully healthy Stroud since Oct 20 v Seattle. Since Stroud came back, they've been averaging 26.8 points/game. I would've been THRILLED if McDaniel became available last offseason - he's exactly what I thought (and still think) this team needs: a head coach for the offense. I have no idea what goes on with the team, obviously - but if Woody Mark is not being deployed as a receiver........ there's probably a fairly logical explanation - unless you think, collectively, Caserio, Ryans and Caley + every other member of the team - is just brain-dead stupid?
Maybe they scouted and traded up for him without knowing he could catch? Then he caught a couple of unexpected nifty passes in a game while the coaches weren’t paying attention that only a few fans noticed? Then the tape probably malfunctioned right at those particular points in the game (or the video guy was asleep) so no one saw it happen during film study?
