    Marty Supreme - 5.5/10

This is an semi-interesting story ... based loosely on an autobiography which was based loosely on a 1950s ping pong hustler, Marty Reisman.

I didn't even know that ping pong hustling was a thing.

The protagonist in his pursuit of his ping pong world championship goals leaves an impressive number of people damaged in his wake.

Knowing it's from the Safdie Brothers makes this sentence make perfect sense.

No thanks, but maybe someday. I couldn't finish Uncut Gems.

If you ever see a guy come up to the ping pong table and get his paddle out of a tiny briefcase and screw the 2 parts together...don't play him for money

somehow had never watched The Lighthouse with Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, watched it on HBO last night. Can't say I really "enjoyed" it, but it is a work of art for sure. Reminded me of Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man throughout, stylistically--whereas thematically The Lighthouse seems about as much of a polar opposite of Dead Man and you can get. Fascinating movie overall. Probably an 8/10 or thereabouts for me.

hadn't seen Eggers's The Witch either, so followed up with that one last night. Enjoyed it quite a bit more, glad I watched the two films together in quick succession. I love period pieces, and that for me was the best part of the movie, but the film-making again is remarkable. So a good couple of evenings watching excellent movies I had missed. 9/10

Agreed on this and your take on The Witch also. I've rewatched that, don't think I ever need to watch The Lighthouse again.

I watched Relay on Netflix because i was bored and Netflix recommended it and I had nothing else to do.

I hadn't heard of it but I was genuinely surprised at how good it was. It was a very well crafted corporate espionage plot built around sort of a novel idea I'd never seen in film before.

There were a couple of little plot holes that weren't super obvious, and the casting was odd in that the star power was not in the main lead, but nothing that really affected my enjoyment.

Highly recommended if you have time to actually pay attention. Not a movie you'll remember as an all-time classic in 20 years, but nice suspense to keep your focus for a couple of hours.

I know you're a fan of John le Carré, but did you know they're doing a 2nd series of "The Night Manager" and also someone is doing a new movie of "Spy Who Came In From the Cold"?

I fell asleep watching Tinker Tailor....the other night, then we watched the rest of it the next morning. I'd love more George Smiley stories.

I didn't know they're doing another season. John LeCare's characters in print always come across to me as slightly depressed or beaten down by life, which strikes me as probably the most realistic depiction of what that kind of life would do to you. The characters feel much more like real human beings who happen to be living the life than the characters in most spy stories.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery -- 10/10

I prefer the first of the "trilogy" slightly more, but it is an outstanding film. Rian Johnson has delivered three amazing Knives Out Mystery movies and promised that a fourth is in the works. As long as Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig are enjoying the process and the films are commercially successful, I suspect that there will be more.

The movie's main themes covers both religion and to a lesser extent politics. If these themes easily trigger you, you might want to avoid. The main protagonist in the movie is Father Jud (played by Josh O'Connor), a freshly minted Catholic priest who is given a challenging first assignment. The negatives that the script exposes about religion are balanced by the positives that Father Jud's faith brings.

Highly recommend. If you like the first two, you will like this as well.

    The Naked Gun (2025) - 5/10

I lol'ed hard one scene and found it much better than expected.

    Novocaine - 4/10

I feel like this had potential and could've been decent/fun in the right hands.

I feel like I've been a little too kind in the past and I'm changing up my ratings...

    10/10 - A masterpiece
9/10 - Excellent. Ranks among my favorites.
8/10 - Do not miss this one!
7/10 - Deserving of praise if not Oscar buzz
    6/10 - A theatre-worthy popcorn flick
5/10 - Poor to average with some redeeming qualities. A decent matinee or alternative to doing nothing.
4/10 - Some redeeming qualities again, but it left me wanting a lot more and I advice you to skip it
    3/10 - I finished it
    2/10 - A complete pile of dog ****
1/10 - Among the worst movies ever made
