Um, Rivers said he would talk with Steichen weekly about this offense, as coached his HS team. Steichen was Rivers' quarterback coach from 2016-2019. https://www.colts.com/news/colts-of...ing-quarterback-jim-bob-cooter-shane-steichen
What college QB or soon to be available QB would you take over CJ instead of signing him to a extension
CJ has the 15th worst interception rate through the game against the Chargers. FWIW, there are some very good QB's ahead of him with WORSE interception percentages. Qb Worst Interception Percentage Leaders | StatMuse https://share.google/jNrxAT1SmEcsYyBNR
CJ gotta do better with the added responsibilities he asked for. You whine and cry for more control at the line of scrimmage but he's still struggling with keeping composure and apply pressure on defenses that blitz...
One play stood out. Chargers had virtually everybody at the line and were bringing the house. All receivers were doing 10-15 yard routes down field that take time to develop. Seems like there had to be something CJ could’ve called at the line of scrimmage to get a quick hit slant or something or maybe the set didn’t allow for it, in which Caley is an idiot. If I was an opposing defensive coach, I wouldn’t wait until the end of the game, I would bring the house on passing downs every time. The Texans have no plan to handle it.
One thing I remember from that BO'B coaching video that made the rounds when he was hired was him preaching the need to have a plan for Blitz-0. Updated version here when BO'B was at Alabama: Granted, he's not the end all be all by any means, but the concepts should be similar because the Texans run a derivative of that New England offense.
I am beginning to worry about CJ. This guy can't handle a simple blitz. How many weeks in a row have we not had an answer.
Not true at all. You get flamed for having unrealistic concerns like "CJ hasn't been good" when his stats say he's been okay, also for hyping up guys like Drake Maye who have played not a single great defense. Saying he can't handle a blitz is based on facts, i doubt anyone would flame me for that.
They are not simple blitzes. You have many of those blitzes are free rushers from the outside or 6 or 7 coming at a time. This is the OC needing to scheme outlets. Most of the time, there are none. You can look at the All 22 and you see there are no quick routes and Receivers are not open. Caley seems not to have a plan. CJ has not mastered this offense, and these are things he will watch film in the off-season to get better in the scheme. Clint on 610 postgame has been hammering why Caley doesn't have a plan to handle these blitzes. Caley has not used motion to the flats and screens. CJ needs to be better overall, but he needs help as this is still year 1 in this offense.
Tomato, tomato. I have said CJ has been average, extremely good and then extremely bad. Literally what he was yesterday. He’s been that for two seasons now. You make all the excuses in the world for him, Maye has more sacks and less help. Still a top two MVP candidate
Simple blitzes or exotic, he has to recognize and get them in a play to handle it. Caley has to be better, but CJ has to recognize it. First year isn’t an excuse, there are several guys in first years doing better.
Actually, recognition is not the problem. Having somewhere to go with the ball is. That is why the sack are down and the throwaways are up.
Recognition is absolutely the issue. Presnap recognition so he can change the play, which both he and Caley have said he has the power to do.
But you have to have a play to go to. That has been missing. Caley has called these long-developing routes. The only quick routes that have been called are quick slants or seam routes. The problem is that teams are covering those. Where are the flat routes using motion or screens>?
Especially in this offense. By design, the QB has the responsibility to adjust the protections and routes at the LOS.
CJ has the freedom to audible. Ware pointed out that CJ was missing his checks at the LOS against the Raiders. He was still missing them against the Chargers. This really isn't year 1 for either Caley or CJ anymore. In fact this is yr 3 for CJ, how much longer is it going to take for CJ to become proficient at making these checks at the LOS, or will he ever become proficient at this?
