I don’t think kids are more supervised, they’re given electronic devices to keep them occupied. And giving a kid unfettered access to the internet is like willfully giving them a nicotine addiction.

Yeah it is worst-case. I think society will look back at nascent smart phones and social media and see it the same way we look at smoking now: terrible for everyone. There is some truth to what you’re saying. There used to be helicopter parenting and now there’s snowplow parenting where parents go in front of kids and clear every obstacle. The result is that young adults can’t deal with conflict on their own.
You are 100% correct. As a child in thr early 80s we had two working parents and some like myself were true latch key kids but we didn't have the distractions like live gaming and social media. We had to find stuff to do. Many an afternoon of pick up basketball and kick the can. We saw people in real life not through a headset gaming or posting on line.
I agree 100%, both my folks worked so we just had to be back for dinner..............the only electronics we played was Defender Stargate at Stop N Go before school. We had no phones or any distractions and we interacted with each other. The internet and the iPhone will go down as great achievements but the impact on our kids (and adults) is horrible and from what I have seen the boys are worse than the girls
In this case, the fear isn't that the kids are messing it up for us, but that we messed it up for them. Maybe that's character growth. I don't know if that's true or not. Curious why you think not.

There are times I seriously believe that social media (in other words, the internet) is the ruination of this country. Stories like this one no longer surprise me. Lies are being pumped out wholesale. We see it here, everyday. “Social media” played an enormous role in producing trump and his ignorant followers. Both are creatures of social media. It’s getting worse. Billionaires, freed by trump and the remnants of the GOP, are buying up large chunks of the major news outlets, firing those who don’t share their far-right proclivities and replacing them with those who do. Jeff Bezos, as an example, who has more money than he knows what to do with, bought the Washington Post, apparently just because he could. A new play toy. We used to have regulations that would have made it very difficult for billionaires to amass large numbers of media outlets. Those days are now “ancient history” and unlikely to return. We are worse off because of it. trump is gutting the federal apparatus painfully created over many decades to rein in corruption and monopolies. Gutting them and gleefully enriching both himself and his family to the tune of billions of dollars. He rode lies and social media to the White House so he could use the nation’s highest office to line his pockets. His supporters, several right here in this forum, cheer him on as they dream up absurd excuses for trump’s authoritarian corruption.
There have been some recent high school walkouts to protest ICE and there's a big one going on in Oregon today to demand schools and districts develop ICE protocols for student protection. As far as social media goes, I find it both hilarious and tragic that the conversation always centers around youth when it's a bunch of Boomers and older folks who have absolutely had their brains fried by social media propaganda and subsequently take actions to betray American values and destroy the country. You can tell most of the administration, Supreme Court, and other elected GOP folks are marinating in outrage juice just by the way they talk and write (or have their staff write--or AI). There are always bad anecdotes, but in general, the kids are alright--and certainly better than many of our "leaders."
