binged this song last night. The OG: a Canadiana cover: a more contemporary cover: Blue-eyed Philly Soul:
Their backing music sounds like it borrowed from Hey Good Lookin along with some Shake, Rattle and Roll vibes. Maybe a touch of something else as well.
They are a Czech folk band. This album cover and their sound give the feel of 1960s Eastern Europe, but actually it was released in 1991 post-Velvet Revolution...lol.

There are quite a few Covers of Hey, Good Lookin and McPherson is probably familiar with a Cover if not the original. It is possible that McPherson has done a Cover himself and it just hasn't been added to this list. Hey, Good Lookin Covers Here is a version by Boxcar Willie. Shake, Rattle and Roll is another song from the '50's with Bill Haley & the Comets having a hit with it. Shake Rattle and Roll[ Covers Start at about 1:30 in Shake Rattle & Roll then compare it to starting at 30 seconds in Hey, Skinny Santa! In regards to groups using music that they are already familiar with as backing music for Christmas songs, it makes sense because they can get up to speed much faster doing that. Also, composing a Christmas song entirely from scratch can be viewed as inefficient since the song will be played - popular for only four weeks or so during the year.
