Should the Rockets build around Reed Sheppard instead?

Because they are both white combo guards I guess?!

They don't play at all the same, as somebody who loved Dragic. Gogi was a transition guy who thrived on attacking the rim hard and early. Reed's entire game is based around his jump shot.

Reed's game is very much in the vein of CP3, Curry, Booker. Guys who want to get to certain spots with the bare minimum of space and kill you with their jump shot, and the drive is to keep you honest. Dragic was like Westbrook, D-Wade, Amen, just not as gifted. All downhill as much as possible.

 

And that’s how you build a championship team. Stockpile complementary players. And I for one am glad that it appears like we hit on Reed.

 

Well, we've had a Moses and now we have a Sheppard.

Moses saw the promised land but never got there, but a Sheppard will now lead our flock.

There is no urgency to do that right now, just end the season in style, go from there.

The bigger question is can Reed and Durant both be effective together? Right now it doesn’t seem like a very good fit. With a different coach I’d have more confidence in it working out. Reed needs to be one of our main offensive weapons and he can’t be that with Durant running ISO’s every play. Durant really should be playing 28-30 mins a game (sit out back to backs as well) and most of that in the 2nd half. Every minute that Durant is off the court, Reed should be on the court. They have to overlap some, but reducing Durant’s minutes will help both Reed and Amen develop as offensive engines and give them plenty of time to work on their games. Durant was supposed to be the closer we needed and that is the role he should play on this team. Playing Durant monster minutes is counterproductive to our growth as a team.

 

I’m starting to question if his ceiling isn’t way higher than we think.

 

I do think today it is extremely hard to even put the right players around someone like a young Curry.
They played the best small ball of their generation.

Given that you have to do gymnastics around the 1st and 2nd aprons.

I'd wait till the next CBA.
