or when he can get good position consistently for his teammates to get the ball to him in a fast, efficient way he's getting there
Assuming Rox success hang on Yao's performance, they should feed ball to Yao and establish his game earlier. However, often whenever there are several unsuccessful feeding, the guards just quit feeding the ball to Yao, which cause inconsistant of Yao's performance because he barely have chance to shoot the ball.
A question like this was posed to JVG. His response was that you can't base Yao's play based only on his stat. Because different teams play him in different ways. This is true of every player. Even Shaq started off slow statwise this year. Yet his presence has definitely been a huge plus for the Miami offense. Because the Heat's other players have made defense pay for paying too much attention to Shaq. The other 4 Rockets on the court with Yao can do the same.
very good point. Many people just go to the box score and see a bad shooting night or something like that. unless you watch the whole game its kind of hard to judge the player. There are many games that even if yao does not get the ball or doesnt shoot well. But the difference is that he gets so much attention on defense that it leaves someone open for shots and also opens the floor. It's up to the rest of the team to take advantage of it and do their job. So in that sense Yao does a great job of doing a lot on the court even though he might not be scoring a lot all the time.
First things first, Yao needs to learn how to defend properly and learns how to play with fouls. He is averaging 4 fouls a game. At this rate, he is not going to dominate. One reason he is playing timidly in the first half is that he is worried about fouls. Any time he only has 1 or 2 fouls heading into the 2nd half, he is more aggressive and scores more. Yao, learn how to play with fouls!!!
Yeah, when you see Garnett was so occupied to help defend Yao, you know how much attention Yao gets on defense.
By the way, this is an area that summer league or NCAA play can help him tremendously. Right now, he does not have the opportunity to play under fouls when games are not important, like in the summer games.
