Very strange comparison. Bregman started slow but he would’ve been the first player ever to be called a “head case” for that reason. Sanchez was smiling and laughing and practically skipping back to the dugout after swinging wildly and looking really stupid in his AB’s. Sanchez carries himself like a head case. Bregmans slow starts were not at all the same thing. Plus, Bregman is the much better player than Sanchez and has proven that for years. Very odd comparison
This year he is going to have an even bigger 6.5 million dollar smile while he walks back to the dugout after looking foolish. You are going to love him even more...
He also said he does not want to sign with a team that already has Japanese players. (he'll probably end up signing with the Doyas lol)
Cards eating $20M and getting back Boston’s #4 prospect and a SP who graduated last year as a fringe Top 100 prospect.
Thats way more than I was expecting. According to Fangraphs, Gray was worth $28.8M last year and projects for $32M this year. According to mlbtraderumors.com the restructured contract makes his CBT salary $41M which means Boston is getting $11M in value. My estimates is the 2 prospects have an estimated $43M in value. ( two 50 grade prospects, one with a 70 grade pitch and the other having already achieved an MLB debut) If that's the cost of trading for starting pitching, the Astros aren't trading for a TOR guy and may need to lose a pick and go over the CBT to get one in FA.
I fear we will end up with JV and little else bc we don’t want to “overpay” when the market valuation is high.
If the Astros organization just run back the same group from last year then they might as well start selling off pieces now.
I understand the state of the marketplace in MLB, but it's insane to me that a pitcher like Sonny Gray is valued at $30-40M a year
What would our best offer look like for Skubal to pair with Hunter? Thinking... Cam Smith Brice Mathews Jake Meyers Miguel Ullola I might consider that... probably a no for just the one year... if it was like Cole and 2 or 3 years for sure. I would want an extension worked out for something like 6 years 180 if offering so much club control. They could run Cole, Melton, Sanchez, or free agents in the cf and rf spots.
I guess you are right to put "overpay" in quotation marks because its not an overpay if that IS the market. However, to put it in perspective bot Boston pitchers were 50 grade prospects per fangraphs and the Astros don't even have any 50 grade prospects. So it would be like trading away the top 2 prospects in the system for the privilege of paying Sonny Gray $21 million for 1 season then he is a FA.
I'm not following. Their 9 everyday hitters missed an average of about 40% of the season and their starters about 50% of their starts. They nearly made the playoffs despite that. That's an incredible feat.
I have not paid much attention to Gray in a few years. Your statement makes a lot of sense to me. Then I checked the stats. How is he striking out that many guys and walking so few, but only when he plays for a NL team? I don't make a point to watch Cincy and St Louis much, and the stats for his NL years do not match the player that played for the Twins and Oakland (RIP Oakland). Unless a player plays for a great NL team, they basically disappear to me when they are in the NL.
