    What could possibly go wrong?

Germany wants to build Europe’s strongest army – a new conscription bill is moving that closer

Germany’s armed forces, or Bundeswehr, have been chronically underfunded since the Cold War.

For three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, military expenditure remained below 2% of the country’s GDP – below NATO targets – amid a lack of perceived threats, taboo around Germany’s military might and a strongly pacifist national mindset following the Nazi era.

Then came Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Amid calls within Europe to be “war-ready,” this triggered a significant shift in the country’s outlook. Then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz proclaimed a “Zeitenwende” – or “period of change” – leading to the creation of a special fund of €100 billion ($116 billion) to modernize the Bundeswehr.

In June 2024, Germany set aside its unease over its military past to mark its first Veteran’s Day since World War Two, with new legislation stating that the day should be celebrated “publicly and visibly” every year on June 15.

This attitudinal shift only deepened after Merz took office earlier this year, with the new chancellor not only pledging to turn Germany’s armed forces into “Europe’s strongest conventional army” but also committing to doubling defense spending to meet new NATO targets.

“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin only understands the language of power,” Merz said at the time.

They're going to have trouble keeping up with Poland. Everybody's figured out they can't rely on the US anymore.

I know one side of the political divide doesn't care, but that used to be a near absolute-trust relationship that was more than half a century in the making that Donnie just threw out like trash.

Germans hate Poles more than they hate the French. Germany will be more likely to ally with Russia to repeat the combined invasion than sit and watch Poland become ascendent.

I'm down for it. And I'm French. But honestly, the time for some European conquest is well over. For one, Europe is too small potatoes. Even if Germany conquered all of Europe, they'd still be a secondary player against US, China, and Russia, with India also coming on. So the prize of world hegemony isn't there anymore. For two, and maybe because world hegemony isn't on the table anymore, the animosity and competitiveness just isn't there. There is some political friction, but the French, Germans, Italians, Poles, etc all basically get along. They can all collectively discriminate against the North Africans and look down on the Americans instead.

What year do you think this is? Germans don't 'hate' Poland. Germans definitely think they're better than everyone else but if it comes to WWIII, Europe will be united in politics and common enemy, outside of the UK and possibly some smaller Baltic states/Turkey. There's no way in hell they would ally with Russia.

Get your head out of WWII geopolitical dynamics.

See above. There won't be any conquering of Europe. Most if not all of Europe would come together in the face of a threat. They've all been in NATO for too long. The GDP of Europe is around 28 trillion. That's just under the USA's 30 trillion. Germany itself is 3rd in GDP.

Thinking that Russia is a superpower is a ****ing joke; if you need proof just look at the war in Ukraine. The only thing they have is nukes, and NATO has nukes.

At any rate, the current US military dwarfs most combined militaries. It would take all of the world vs the USA for the USA to lose. And that would be due to Trump ****ing up the military and if the world militaries could efficiently cooperate, which I doubt would happen.

One of the rationales for the post-WWII order was to prevent this very thing.

We are in the process of re-learning some very painful lessons (on many fronts, both foreign and domestic).

Thank you Donald and all of the "america first" idiots.

I do think that Europe needs to build military infrastructure to not have to rely on the US, BUT that's only because Donald Trump and the pro Putin wing of America (even those on the far left) have made the US unreliable to begin with. This is only a thing now because of your ignorance.

This reminds me of the late great Norm:

Germany’s Army Is Rebuilding. What Could Go Wrong?
    ...

It marks a huge shift not just from how Germany manages its finances but how it perceives both itself and its place in the world. “After World War II, the allies did a tremendous job of re-educating the German population,” said Carsten Breuer, the Bundeswehr’s highest serving general. “This led to a society which I would say is peace-minded, and of course there’s nothing wrong with that. But it is also non-military.”

However, for many people, any glorification of the German military will always have uncomfortable associations with the country’s dark history: Neo-Nazi groups still use German military symbols and history as part of their recruitment propaganda, and the Bundeswehr has been plagued by far-right scandals in recent years. For some, the government’s push to embrace the army is one more sign of a dangerous transformation in the country’s political sentiments: The far-right AfD is currently second in the polls, and the ruling CDU has shed former leader Angela Merkel’s liberal image in favor of a harsh anti-immigration stance. And as welfare, social services and climate protection face possible cuts to support military spending, Germany’s politicians face a challenge in seeing how long they can keep the newfound support going.

This is GOOD. Less investment by America in Europe. Germany can handle security guarantees for countries like Ukraine -- where Biden squandered $200 BILLION of taxpayer money. This is a classic example of putting America First -- and putting the American taxpayer and soldier first.

    GOOD DAY

Germany is putting America first? That doesn't seem quite appropriate.
