Fun fact: In the 100 years before the Edmund Fitzgerald, almost 6,000 freighters sunk in the Great Lakes. In the 50 years since the Edmund Fitzgerald, there have been zero. Why? How? Well, after the sinking, there were lots of changes in ship design, navigation charts, inspection criteria, etc. However, the big reason is the National Weather Service modernized, restructured, and dramatically changed weather forecasting, including great improvements in predicting quickly developing storms.
