A few things on tap for today in history:

FDR won his first presidential election (1932), as did Teddy (1904) and JFK (1960).

The first court filings are made after the 2000 presidential election.

The first human heart transplant was made by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in 1922.

I never would’ve guessed HBO started in 1972. I always thought it was late 70’s. Interesting.

Fun fact: In the 100 years before the Edmund Fitzgerald, almost 6,000 freighters sunk in the Great Lakes. In the 50 years since the Edmund Fitzgerald, there have been zero. Why? How?

Well, after the sinking, there were lots of changes in ship design, navigation charts, inspection criteria, etc. However, the big reason is the National Weather Service modernized, restructured, and dramatically changed weather forecasting, including great improvements in predicting quickly developing storms.
