Tim Donaghy was the Rockets fans' favorite ref 10 years ago around this time. If anyone remembers the third game of the season in 1994-95 (played on 11/9), the Rockets played in Indiana and were up close late 108-104, and a play was drawn up for Reggie to shoot a three in the corner. Reggie got the ball, got Hakeem to jump, but Reggie actually jumped into Hakeem and Donaghy called an offensive foul on Miller. Miller went nuts and fans started throwing cups, ice and cups of ice onto the court, all because of that gutsy call by Donaghy. Tonight on 11/11, this same official is now the Rockets fans' most hated official. Yep, Donaghy made that stupid offensive foul call on JJ. The difference between the two calls is that his call 10 years ago was the right one, and this one was not.
ooh i do remember that play and that call and that reaction. stuff was just raining down from the stands.
Its a better post then most of the other crappy posts like JVG sucks and trade Yao threads......lol Nice work JBII........
I remember that game, I think thats the first season that if you got fouled behind the 3 point line, you shoot 3 free throws. That was a crazy game.
In all fairness to the ref, it was the right call. JJ moved and then kind of accidentally elbowed the other player.
Hey JBIIRockets, I remember that game. I also wondered (at the time) why the Indiana fans went NUTS. I have to believe it had a lot to do with the Pacer fans wanting to beat the NBA champs (Rox) soooooo bad that night! They felt that Hakeem got favorable calls but Reggie did not. Reggie was their only "star" and they wanted him to save the day soooo bad. It was funny. If you look at the replay, you can see that Reggie just leaned into Hakeem. But the fans didn't want to see that. They just assumed that Hakeem got favorable treatment. He did before. But NOT that call. That call was fair. Even today, if you showed Pacer fans that replay, they still wouldn't believe it ("No way man! Hakeem fouled him, blah, blah, blah....")
Yep. It was a call that could have gone either way. I think a lot of time they just let players, play through that type of incidental contact. It's just that JJ got caught. He really didn't mean to. It's just that the other player was picked and JJ *looked* like he was doing a moving screen.
