No, I don't think that they view him as a starter at this point. He has caught an average of 50 games a season the last 3-4 years and is best suited for that. I also don't know that they would want to do a two year deal with him. There is a world where Caratini is back, but that means that some of the Astros bigger plans fell through.
caratini and salazar would be OK but i really hate Diaz I would love that trade , but i am also low on meyers. It depends on the pitching prospect we'd have to give up With Matthews, Cole , and Melton . I think we have a decent enough crop of AAA guys to give them a chance to better than meyers in center ( offense included ) we desperately need pitching
I'm sure the Stros new medical staff could keep him on the field for the 85 games he's averaged over the past 10 seasons
Does anyone have an update on our 12 man rotation for 2026? Not sure which arms will be healthy for the start versus joining midway. Somewhere along... Brown Javier Arrighetti Blanco Alexander Walter Mccullers Ullolola France Gordon Blubaugh Wesneski Gusto Dombroski
Dana Brown was responsible for drafting 2 of the top 5 vote getters in the NL ROY voting this year. Braves catcher Drake Baldwin, who won the National League Rookie of the Year on Monday, was selected in the 2022 MLB Draft by Astros general manager Dana Brown while Brown was the vice president of scouting in Atlanta. Brown also drafted Brewers infielder Caleb Durbin, who finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting this year. Durbin was drafted in the 14th round by the Braves in 2021 and traded to the Yankees in December 2022 for Lucas Luetge. He was then dealt to the Brewers with Nestor Cortes for Devin Williams a year ago. Brown also selected 2022 NL Rookie of the Year, outfielder Michael Harris II, in the 2019 MLB Draft while he was with the Braves and took Harris' Rookie of the Year runner-up, pitcher Spencer Strider, in the 2020 MLB Draft.
Yeah - too many guys and too long a track record for the argument that Brown just got lucky in the draft or hit a hot streak. The argument when he was in Toronto was that he didn't make the final call on the guys drafted, before that he was in charge of amateur scouting for the Expos, and had success with the lowest scouting budget in baseball. With the Braves the sceptics said that he had to report to Anthopolus. It is pretty clear to me that Brown can really scout players and that he can identify when the player development isn't up to snuff. I don't know long term how well he will do the other stuff. However, the fact he is so good at scouting and the draft is why the Astros should be trying to hold onto their picks and even trade for supplemental picks. Maximize Brown's strength and get him more money and picks and then let him evaluate guys that could be moved in trades. I know that the Astros had some interest in Goldstein coming back, I wonder if that is feasible.
Alcantara has about $40M in surplus value, Walker has about -$12M. So Houston would need to eat all of Walker’s contract and it still wouldn’t be enough, not that Miami would be interested in that anyway. If Miami trades Alcantara they will have zero guaranteed contracts on their books. They appear to be ready to raise payroll, and they are potentially catching flack from other owners for not spending (and giving players leverage in upcoming CBA negotiations). I could see Miami taking on Walker as part of an Alcantara trade, but it would be part of a bigger deal where Houston also included a couple of good prospects. But I could see Miami being interested in Walker even outside an Alcantara trade. They want to improve their roster, they have a hole at 1B, Walker would be a good influence on their young talent, he has some upside, and he wouldn’t be that expensive.
Sometimes I see a stat that just looks impossible to be true. I had to look that up. I am shocked to learn that is his average over the past 10 years. I thought it was hyperbole. I was expecting in the low 60s.
Brown finished 3rd in CY. (Twenty-four 3rd place votes, three 4th place votes, two 5th place votes(80 total); Skubal 198, Crochet 132) Espada finished 6th in ALMOY. (One second place vote from McTaggart) https://bbwaa.com/25-al-cy/ https://bbwaa.com/25-al-mgr/ ____________________
I'd give them a package centered around Paredes and Matthews. Pena Marte Alvarez Correa Altuve Walker Cole Diaz Smith That lineup has some bite.
