Looks like the fiancee and I will ring in the new year in New Orleans. I know there are quite a few of you who love that town, so let me know what we have to do (besides win big at Harrah's) and where we have to eat (most important). Gracias.
i love new orleans!! where are you staying?? or is that up for grabs, too?? the wife and i like eating at NOLA's..it's one of emeril's places. good stuff. of course, no trip to new orleans is complete without Cafe du Monde beignets.
We're staying at one of the Marriotts downtown. We've got a $200 gift certificate. Yeah, I meant to try Cafe Du Monde the only other time I was there, but that trip was pretty much a disaster all the way around.
For dinner, visit Vincent's in the Garden District. Cajun/Creole-style Italian food. Lots of seafood/pasta dishes. It is awesome. Definitely do Cafe DuMonde for coffee, beignets and the newspaper in the morning. And get a muffaletta at the place where they were invented....Central Grocery in the French Quarter. Court of Three Sisters in the Quarter is also a good brunch spot.
i think there's a courtyard. i've stayed at the old marriott on canal a few times before. good place....not far to the quarter, just right around the block, really. nice hotel, and i think they've redone it within the past 5 years or so. you guys will have a blast!!!
For music, check who's playing at the original Tipitina's, in the Garden District. Remember that for good luck, be sure and rub the head of the bust of Professor Longhair as you walk into the club. There is a cool little package store/lounge on the corner of the block if you get there too early. http://www.tipitinas.com/default.asp Another place I love to go to party in New Orleans is the Rock -n- Bowl, in Metarie, close to the Saints facility and Zephyr stadium. It's a bowling alley with a music club on the second floor. The last time I was in New Orleans, I saw Geno Delafose play there. http://www.rockandbowl.com/
Louisiana Pizza Kitchen - crawfish & basil pizza rocks, met Lenny Kravitz there Delmonico's, French, Clancy's, Commander's Palace & Galatoire's are all very good, but pricey. Good food stuff here: http://foodfest.neworleans.com/top_ten_new.php Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop down Bourbon has a rather interesting history, the building's over 230 years old. Good bar, cheap drinks: http://ultimatepubguide.com/pubs/info.phtml?pub_id=163 NYE shiznit & other goings on: http://www.neworleans.com/cgi-bin/oracle/hs.cgi?search=CAT&Category=LOCALS:Festivals Events December Don't know about live music other than it's always good, I usually just ask around.
I'm a student at Tulane University in New Orleans, so if you have any questions feel free to ask here or email me and i will let you know/give you some suggestions
Lucky Dog, particularly the cajun one, is the best hot dog on earth! You can buy them from vendors all over the place. My wife and a couple of friends and I spent the Millenium New Year's in New Orleans and it totally ruled. We walked to the Mississippi at dawn amongst the ruins and saw the sun rise and drank a bottle of champange. Good times. There is plenty of stuff to do in N.O. besides get roasted (see: the Handgrenade). There are a bunch of really great walking tours that are well worth your while. I've done ones in the Garden District and in the French Quarter. What a rich and wonderful history they have. The food will also kick your ass. You should have a great time...enjoy!
Yes. Its essential to have a lucky dog around midnight when you are drunk and hungry and beignets with chickory coffee at cafe dumont anytime afterwards. the eating recommendations have been pretty good on here. commanders palace and galatoire's are 'must' eat places although some say johnny's in fat city has the best filet mignon and twice baked spuds.
Man, all of you are making me ravenous and giving me a powerful urge to travel. RM95, your New Year's is gonna ROCK! (great shots, rockHEAD... it's a great place )
First of all I hate New Orleans. Here are a few tips: 1. Dont gamble at Harrah's. I lost $60 in like 5 minutes. The blackjack odds suck (I forgot to look at the paybacks but I think its like 6:5 which blows), and the slots are tight. Since its the only decent casino in town, try a few of the places on the way there like Isle of Capri or something - way better than Harrah's. 2. Dont expect romance. I didnt realize how bad this dump of a town smells (dried vomit and fresh garbage that line the streets that you have to dodge in order to walk by others). At least you got a decent hotel. Ours was ok. 3. Do your homework on places to eat. I didnt and got hosed at a crappy restaurant where I ended up paying $45 for lunch!! Yeah I didnt look at the menu before we went in either. 4. There are t*** everywhere so be careful. Its really easy to get caught staring at boobies, and I got caught looking a bit too much. Not so much that she was pissed, but enough that it bothered her. 5. Dont get your fortune read by an old Indian dude that flirts with you more than your girlfriend. Its bad enough that the dude is touching my hand, it was worse when I figured out that he was charging us $25 a pop !!! 6. Dont bother eating bignets at Cafe Du Monde. You have to wait 2 hours for a tiny table crammed up next to other people for a couple of pieces of fried dough and lousy ass coffee served by bitter waitresses that couldnt get a gig at Luby's working the iced tea cart. 7. Bring lots of change. On an average weekend, I would say that you will get approached by about 35- 40 bums that will beg for change. Others will stand on a milk crate, try to act like a robot or some bullsh!t pantomime. Throw in some nickels and make them happy. Other than that..... have a good time dude yeah call me back beotch..... 8-754-9546 Oh yeah Lucky Dog gave me the sh!ts the night that we got there, but whats new...... everything gives me the sh!ts.
Here is a little advice as well: If a guy approaches you and says for $10, he can tell you where you got your shoes tell him YOU GOT THEM ON YOUR FEET and walk away quickly.
