I loved his catch but it has been remembered a bit more importantly than it really was. That does not mean it wasn't spectacular. But if he misses it the Astros have a 1 run lead with 2 outs left to get and a runner on 2nd (possibly 3rd but taking 3rd is likely a big risk in that spot) Surely an important play hut hardly " saved the game" Mancini's play the inning before was much more important and is never even mentioned. If that play isn't made its likely a tie game with the Phillies still hitting and a runner in scoring position in the 8th.
He helped us win a World Series. If you can't be grateful for that that speaks volumes on what kind of Astros fan you are.
Does seem like a guy that needs a "fresh start"! I always wished Chas could stay healthy and perform well enough to lock down an outfield position as a starter. Unfortunately, he never really was able to. He and Meyers have had ample opportunities to do just that. Meyers kind of did do it this last season. Who knows where Chas might have been if he stayed healthy? I wish you well on your new team, Chas!
I've long argued this. McCormick's play was prettier; Manicni's was more impactful. And there isn't any "likely" about it - runners were on 1st and 3rd. If the ball get by Mancini, it's a tie game, and your best-case scenario is runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. I don't remember if Juan Segura was fast (?) and I have no working knowledge of the Phillies' field dimensions - but the ball was *on the line* - not inconceivable that a relatively fast runner, taking off at the crack of the bat, may have been able to score from 1st. The win probability after Mancini's play jumped 14%. McCormick's 6%. It was HUGE play, no question, because if he doesn't make the catch, it's a runner in scoring position with 1 out and Harper up. And it was an AWESOME catch. But I'll always have a much softer place in my heart for Mancini - who, remember, had not played the field in, like, 30 days and they put him at 1B in the B8 of a 3-1 game in game 5 of the World Series. Just an incredible play.
I’ve never heard anyone ever say that the Chas catch was more important or “impactful” than the Mancini play.
