I went shooting the other day......for the first time in years. And I swear......I had the best damn time.

Now I have the bug for a new gun. I've never owned a centerfire automatic pistol before, and that's what I want.

And I want a .45. At first I wanted a Kimber, and a certain part of me still does, but another part of me wants a non-1911 type gun. Like a Glock.

Anyway.....what do I want? What's the best gun going out there for the money these days?

My first choice would be a Kimber, but a close second would be the Sig Sauer pistols. They are great pistols. Several gov. agencies carry them. Glocks are great guns also, I'm just not a big fan of the Glock, just a personel preference.

i have a question: If I wanted to buy a sniper rifle, would I be asked unnecessary questions from the gun dealer? Would there be extra background checks?

I don't think a "sniper rifle" is something that is defined by the ATF......it's just something a gun company may use to describe their gun. Especially if they're known to market their guns to law enforcement and government agencies. If they do call it a "sniper" rifle, then they have no doubt gone to great lengths to make it as accurate as possible.

I could be wrong, but I doubt you'll have any trouble purchasing one of these weapons.

NO problem at all. You can stroll into a gun shop and buy a scoped, high-powered rifel like a .308, .270 or 30.06, and walk out in fifteen minutes. Hell, they MIGHT even have it already sighted in for ya!

Regarding handguns, Kimber's are VERY steep but definitely considered a "cadillac" as far as handguns go. I always preferr a 1911 style hadngun, they just "feel" right. ON the other hand, Sig's are truly about as bad as they come. Sigs are one of the few handguns that I have shot that can make you a better shooter. You aim, they hit, the balance and trigger pull are excellent and the quality of workmenship is unsurpassed, even by a Kimber. In either case, don't mess around, get a .45--EVERYTIME.

Where is the best place to buy a handgun that will be used in emergency purposes for home security in Houston?

Remember I am a newbie in this area and would need to go to a store that could answer ALL of my questions without getting the annoyed eye-roll from some gun fanatic behind the counter.

I have a Glock 19 and I've shot plenty of Sigs. Both are nice guns.

That said if someone is breaking in my house I'm grabbing the 12 gauge.

And as far as fun to shoot. Give me a single action colt, winchester repeating rifle and a side by side double barrel any day over a semi auto pistol.

VooDoo is 100% right drapg...handguns are not suited for home defense or emergency use. Go to any gun store and get you used 12 guage. The mere sound of the racking slide when you pump it will send baddies a runnin'!

I dont own a gun, but I would think it would be easier to pull out a handgun compared to a rifle. Could you elaborate on this as I am thinking of getting a gun for the house.

Nice Snatch reference. Speaking of Desert Eagles, I've wondered how good of guns they really are. I've always been a big fan of them when playing CS, but I have no idea what kind of gun they are in real life. Anybody ever own one? I'm curious about cost, quality, etc..

I've also always heard that a shotgun is the best home defense, but it seems like it wouldn't be very convenient if someone was breaking in your house. It's not like I'm going to leave a loaded shotgun sitting under my pillow.

A shotgun doesn't require the accuracy of a pistol. Point and shoot a shotgun in the right direction and it is likely to hit the target. Not so with a single bullet.

Absolutely, a shotgun is damm near fool-proof, FAR more powerful than a hand-gun when loaded up with some "high brass" double .00 buck-shot, and a great deal easier to wield than a handgun for "home defense". Here's why:

First off, a shotgun shoots a spread--you don't need to use pin-point aim to hit your traget. You will find, if you have ever used handguns before, that it's hard enough to hit what you want in broad daylight, concentrating on trigger pull, arm allignment, sight picture and breathing with no one attacking you and the target only 15 feet away.

Experienced cops, when in a "gun battle" will frequently empty an entire clip at an assailant who is 5-6 feet away and hit nothing but air. I don't have any exact figures, but it takes some one VERY skilled and cool headed to be deadly with a handgun at any distance more than 6 feet.

Shotguns....just rack the slid and hear the perp run off into the night...or if you are Roxran, pull the charging handle and let them hear that nice mettalic ring of a battle rifle prepared to spit death.

As far as ease of use, a loaded Shotgun is safer than a hand gun and requires less to bring to bear. You can keep a shotguns magazine loaded and the safety off and just jack one quickly in the chamber--you WANT them to hear that sound as it is unmistakeable.

Keep it under your bed, right where your hand can reach it and PRAY that you NEVER need it.

Just my tow-cents, might be a liberal but I'm an FFL holder and know my gunz!

    How about this...

"Today I didn't even have to use my A.K.
I got to say it was a good day"

I would definitely like to have a gun for shootin' down at the range.

Unfortunately I live with irresponsible people whom I don't exactly trust with a powerful hand/shotgun in the house.

About the Desert Eagle though...isn't that thing as powerful as a shotgun? It seems to be about damn near the size of one.

Oh, a desert eagle chambered for .50 cal is about as powerful as they come for a handgun...but compared to a high-brass round out of a shotgun...no way

If you want to go shooting sometime, let me know--I live in The Woodlands and frequent the range with my classic military rifles, mostly WWII vintage. You get a "kick" out of shooting my old German Mauser "Saving-Private-Ryan-Style"...hehehe

You are most welcome ROCKSS, I would recomend getting a Remmington or Winchester, but a Mossberg pump will do the job just as well!
