I have not yet given up, but there's fair criticism. Anyone who is not a believer has justified reasons for it. Hoping Reed turns it around.
No, I think the offensive potential is there. He can split double teams and I think there is a craftiness there to be unlocked... The problem is, with how bad he is defensively right now, he basically needs to be Steve Nash on offense to overcome this or Trae Young or Tony Parker. His offense needs to be elite in order for him to be a good player. Thing is...I think he has the potential. People saying he does nothing right are wrong. Clearly, he shoots the three extremely well. That's a pretty big asset. His handle is tight, most of his TOs come from passes that are far too ambitious or just late passes. I think there is a lot of talent in him but he has to put it together offensively. Defensively, he has really quick hands. I think with his size, he needs to be a lot more like Pbev or other small guards. A complete pest, physical, bodying, just a gnat...because if he's squared up against an opponent that's faced up, it's likely going to result in that player touching paint. So for him, on defense, he should really look at how other small guards have gained value on that end and its usually just being a gnat and a pest and once he gains that reputation he'll get away with a lot more. He honestly looks like he should have spent another year in college as the starting guard because I feel like watching him offensively he doesn't know what to do with his talent. Like he has no go to or pet move and maybe another year as the featured guard would have helped him there.
I am surprised at this take. Reed played well. Yes, he missed shots but he they were good shots. They will drop. They are shots he has shown he can hit at a high clip. Thought offensively he created well for his teammates. Defensively, I didn't see the liability I saw in game 1. A lot of improvement imo. I thought Jabari, Tari, Amen, Sengun were god awful.
Reed had the lowest plus minus 2x worse than the next worse guy. If this is him playing well what happens when he actually has a good game? You think he will be the new goat of the NBA? If you are just biased for Reed then yes you will be surprised whenever anyone says anything bad about him.
Reed isn't the guy to single out on for the 2Ls we got. We're not out on him. Don't we have bigger fish to fry?
Not really being biased. Plus Minus is a decent indicator, but it also isn't all telling. Are the shots good shots? I think 3 or 4 of his misses were shots taken with a big under the rim leading to an easy put back. Nothing he shot seemed really unnecessary. Split double teams multiple times, beat his defender off the dribble etc. I am not worried about him.
My take on Reed he will never be a star or get voted to an allstar but he can still be a good role player in due time. He can shoot wide open 3s but tbh thats a requirement for 6'1 pgs who arent athletic just look at Aaron Holiday. He has shown great feel for the game so with experience he can prob be like TJ Mcconnel who was a key backup for the Pacers finals run. However I think he is also raw AF and prob needed multiple years in college. His over inflated college stats made him think he can be the man in the NBA so now he is overwhelmed cuz the stuff he does in college isnt working.
Objectively speaking if you missed most of your shots then you played bad even if they were good shots right? This is like blaming Steph for taking those logo 3s even if he made them because they are "bad" shots. So is Steph a bad player cuz he takes all these bad shots all the time? If he isnt why is Reed a good player if he misses all these good shots? Just be consistent with your logical reasoning. Plus minus isnt all telling but when you also consider he was 3-11 and got targeted every time he was on the court I think all the signs showed he played badly.
No way I’m giving up on him but my initial reaction to him being taken as the third pick has only been reinforced. He’s a good crafty scorer just too small for the nba. The turnovers have been really the tell here the first two games. He’s uncomfortable and pressing to get rid of the ball when he’s hounded by bigger aggressive defenders. He doesn’t have the high level point guard skills to maneuver that challenge, and that’s really something that cannot be improved on that much. You don’t just work a little harder and then suddenly have Nash and CP3 skills. So long term what we have is something between a Troy Daniel’s and the potential to MAYBE develop into a FVV type of PG. Fred would be him really peaking out and you can’t really teach Fred’s sort of winning pedigree. Given this roster though playing him is mandatory. This team is loaded with brick layers and poor facilitators. Sengun playing point guard a good portion of that game was embarrassing. Jabari and Tari being floor spacers is problematic to say the least. The reliance on KD is not sustainable at his age. So Stone either needs to make a trade soon or they are gonna have to make it work with Reed and maybe look to play Holiday too or try out Davidson.
There is way more to basketball to making shots. Not sure what logo 3's have anything to do with this. 3/4 on 3 tonight and his defenders were not leaving him. You are the biased one imo.
Yes, but he missed all 7 of the shots he took from 2 and he never even made it to the free throw line. He also turned it over 3 times and had just 1 assist. I appreciate the quick hands on defense and the 3 steals, but his team worse -13 was legit. He had a bad game. Again. I haven't given up on him as a potentially good NBA player yet, but he needs to be much better than he has been so far.
He was 3/11 and played bad defense. Sure he made 3/4 threes but he still ended up 9 pts on 11 shots which is bad right? Oh wait there is more to bball than making shots. His plus minus was the lowest by X2 than the second lowest. Oh wait there is more to basketball than plus minus. Pistons targeted him all game long esp Cad would iso and score all over him but theres more to basketball than defense. How am I the biased one when you keep disregarding every data that shows he played bad? Why dont you tell me what makes you think Reed played great? You cant even say why Reed played well you just like the dude no matter how badly he played but I'm the biased one lol wtf.
I didn't say he played great. I thought he played well. Besides missing shots he facilitated, took good shots, hit his threes, penetrated the defense, was not the liability with team defense you suggest. That was Jabari Smith and Sengun.
I agree that Reed could have benefited from another year in college, especially because a prospect is not guaranteed 2-3 years to develop in the NBA. I do believe we will see a much better player by the season's end (if he's given the chance), and I am encouraged by the steps he has taken to improve his ability to handle the ball and drive into the paint. However, he still picks up his dribble too much. Not really worried about the misses.
Just chill guys. In his first ever real rotation stint, we went up against the two most physically aggressive teams in the entire NBA. Give him some time to get pushed around and adjust. Ime also has to realize we do not need him on ball so much right now, help him be a volume off ball shooter. We need him off ball with players who themselves can initiate offense.
He split several doubles really well. He hit open 3s. We obviously need more from him but I was pleased with his performance last night offensively. Defensively, he’s getting destroyed and his quick hands mean nothing if he’s playing from behind. Offensively, he needs to develop a floater. His midrange jumper is good, but he’s trying to do these bank shots mid range and they’re terrible. Get in the gym with Rafer and learn to Float.
If that is how you judge the worth of players then you must think Thompson is even more worthless. He has a total of -17 over the first two games and Reed has -13. Reed has really been disappointing so far, but his 3 PT shot capability can be a plus for our team. His biggest hurdle has been getting consistent minutes so far. That, and his overall FG%. Then again, you can't expect him to develop as fast as those who got twice as many minutes per game last year. He still won't get starting minutes, but I think that if he continues going from 12.5 min to 20 or more we will see him improve. I'm still hoping. It's not like he has a low IQ. Sure, he won't be the defensive player some are, but I think he's capable of improving his passing skills and his 2 PT shot, and having a good ASST/TO ratio. He's also shown he can snag steals with his quick hands, which is a plus. He can be an asset off the bench when we need someone to hit some 3's. That's one thing Amen is just terrible at.
