It was huge around here until it ended up in Target. That was the end.

If the brand was sold at Yaga in the Galleria or any of the surf/skate shops around, I most likely owned something of theirs.

Marvin Zindler's son, Dan (who also owned Tiddies at one point), had a "surf" shop in The Woodlands. They had all those brands. Friends worked there so I got to steal all kinds of stuff.

EDIT: Got that wrong...he actually created Tiddies.

I was just thinking about the brief fad of Yaga's clothes back in the day. I didn't know there was a store in the Galleria, but there was one in Baybrook Mall. I did own some Yaga's tees and my surfing buddy had a Yaga's hat.

The whole Yaga's merchandising thing is sort of a sordid tale of two brothers. Mike owned the restaurant in Galveston (still does) and his brother did the clothes. There was some friction over the years with the merchandise rights. Probably why the brand didn't grow.

Galleria III. That was my go-to spot for Stussy gear

I'm assuming you're talking about the Yaga cafe on the Strand? I've had several daiquiris there.

Yep, Yaga's Cafe on the Strand. It's still there.

A good friend of mine was the manager for years but got into a heated argument with Mike (owner) and got fired. After that, the menu got bloated and the quality of the food went downhill. ~20 years ago when I lived in Galveston it was the spot to go on weekend nights, full capacity all year round. I was down there a few weeks ago and swung by on Friday night and there were maybe five people at 11:30PM. I also stopped by during Mardi Gras and it wasn't packed even with tourists.

Part of the slump is that Galveston is more tourist-centric now than it was back then, and Gen-Z just doesn't drink like we did/do. I was down there yesterday with my cousin and we went to The Spot on the Seawall for food and a couple of beers and the demographic has shifted from a younger crowd to mostly Boomers/older Gen-X.

It's still cheaper to go out for the night on the Strand vs Houston, though.
