Ties aside, this meeting was obviously a meeting that was designed to turn the screws on Ukraine to accept a deal that would have given Putin a significant portion of Ukraine with little assurance Putin wouldn't come back months later to take even more, and kill more Ukrainians. So if Hegseth wasn't wearing a tie that was meant to send a message to Zelensky he probably should have. Zelensky knows, I know, and even you know that the Trump White House is a hostile place for the democratic countries of Europe to be, and a place that will side with Putin on damn near everything because they are at least ideological allies. Maybe they are still tied to Europe financially due to the post WW2 arms infrastructure, but ideologically you would be kidding yourself if you thought otherwise. So I'll ask you this seriously for once.... do you really think that Hegseth.... regardless of his tie color.... was not intent in that meeting to send a message to Zelensky that this was a place where the United States has his back?? To me the message was clear... Accept Putin's terms, or Russia will blow your country to sh$t, and we will do nothing to stand in his way.

I can't speak to Trump 2.0's stupidity, but I can say that in prior administrations, these meetings were always extremely well orchestrated. These meetings are about as well orchestrated typically as a broadway show. Gaffe's happen, but if the Secretary of Defense wearing a tie that resembles the flag of the world leader's adversary is a gaffe, it would be like the wardrobe coordinator on the new Superman Movie accidentally putting batman's black cape on Superman and the director James Gunn randomly missing that detail. So people like Basso dismissing it... if they are dismissing it as a gaffe... are at best admitting that Trump's people are complete morons.
I disagree. To me the clear message was ... between the two of Putin and Zelensky Trump thinks that he will have better luck twisting Zelensky's arm than Putin's to get a deal done. Getting a peace deal done is what Trump is all about, since a peace deal would increase Trump's chances of the Nobel Peace Prize.
