Evangelicals are a big block. The brainwashed seething mass of Christian white nationalists who would be the first to get blipped into dust, Avengers-style, should Jesus return. All of them sucking on Trump's taint. None of them care about democracy. That's not a Jesus thing.

This video summarizes former Justice Department lawyer Arez Ruvanei's experience as a whistleblower.

    • Ruvanei was fired after he refused to participate in what he considered abuses of power at the DOJ related to a mass expulsion of Venezuelan detainees under the Alien Enemies Act.

    • He claims the department's leadership, including official Amal Boi, prioritized expelling the detainees no matter what, even suggesting they ignore a federal court order.

    • He alleges government lawyers intentionally misled a judge about the planes taking off and violated a subsequent court order to halt the removal.

    • Ruvanei was ultimately fired after he refused to sign a legal brief that he claims contained a lie about a mistakenly deported man being a terrorist.

    • His claims contributed to a broader concern among judges across the country that the DOJ was providing false or highly misleading information to the courts.

Here is a summary of the key points from his interview:

Background and Promotion: Ruvanei spent 15 years as a career attorney at the Department of Justice, defending the policies of multiple administrations. He was promoted to acting deputy director of the immigration section early in the second Trump administration [02:17].

The Alien Enemies Act Order: On the day of his promotion, Ruvanei attended a meeting where Amal Boi, the newly appointed number three official at the DOJ, informed staff that President Trump would invoke the Alien Enemies Act (a rarely used wartime law) to rapidly expel over 100 Venezuelan detainees labeled as terrorists [02:48].

Disregard for Court Orders: Ruvanei claims that Boi stressed that the planes "need to take off no matter what" and suggested that if a court issued an order to stop the expulsion, they might have to "consider telling that court you" [03:32].

Lying to the Court: During a hearing on the matter, government lawyer Drew Enson (who was at the meeting) told Judge James Booseberg, "I don't know," when asked if the planes were leaving that weekend, despite Ruvanei hearing a clear order to the contrary the day before [04:14].

Violation of Judicial Order: The planes took off during the hearing [05:01]. Although Judge Booseberg immediately issued an order to not remove anyone and to return anyone in the air, the detainees arrived at a maximum-security prison in El Salvador five hours later, leading Ruvanei to believe they had explicitly disregarded the court [05:05]-[05:40].

The Refusal to Lie: Ruvanei was later ordered by a superior to argue against the return of a Salvadoran man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia (who had been deported by mistake), by falsely labeling him an MS-13 gang member and a terrorist. Ruvanei refused, saying, "No way that is not correct that is not factually correct it is not legally correct that is that is a lie and I I cannot sign my name to that brief" [07:31]-[07:57].

Firing and Whistleblowing: After refusing to sign the brief, Ruvanei was fired in June [08:46]. He filed a whistleblower disclosure to make his story public.

Wider Concerns: Law professor Ryan Goodman noted that his nonpartisan law journal team had found over 35 cases where judges explicitly stated that the Trump Justice Department was providing "false information" or "intentionally false information" to the courts [09:23].

    The Aftermath:

Amal Boi, who was confirmed for a judgeship, denied advising any DOJ attorney to violate a court order and called Ruvanei's claims "a mix of falsehoods and wild distortions of reality" [10:54].

The Supreme Court later ruled unanimously that the deported prisoners were entitled to their day in court [12:12].

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was returned to the US, and a judge criticized the DOJ's weak attempts to connect him to MS-13 [11:46].

Ruvanei ultimately states that he took an oath to uphold the Constitution and must speak up to draw attention to what has happened to the department and the rule of law [12:49].

That scenario is dependent on the Republicans becoming the "big tent" party. I don't see that happening if either J.D. Vance or another MAGA hero is the nominee in 2028. Also, having listened to months of self-reflection and self-loathing by Democrat talking heads, I don't foresee a return to 2017-2020 style wokeism anytime soon.

Culturally, these people have church (or its second-hand smoke, so to speak) and TV (often without cable or streaming).

They live in small towns or far-flung suburbs. Their world is small. It's easy to manipulate them by playing up fear and loathing of large cities and their multicultural inhabitants.

The racism is already there. When visiting my sister's family near Austin at Christmas and my nephew shows off his "Obama Christmas cookie" (I swear it looked like a brown version of Sluggo from "Mister Bill"), I couldn't help but say, "You know [your aunt]" (my wife) "is part black....right?" Not to mention standing a few feet away. My sister was grinning ear to ear behind her son. "So cute, so funny," her smile seemed to say about my aghast expression.

Trump is also an ignorant non-reader. Ditto his followers. Talk to an Evangelical, much the same, except add the one thing that matters is "Christ is in my heart". (Except they don't adhere to his teachings at all.) And nothing else matters (as Metallica once said).

Trump is their permission and retribution. The evangelicals will never abandon him. Ever. EVER.

Is there anyone left in the prosecutors office who isn’t a Trump lackey?

I’ll answer my own questions. Yes the head prosecutor in the Maryland office was “resigned”. Trump purged all Biden appointees, and many others resigned in protest. https://web.archive.org/web/2025021...25/02/13/maryland-us-attorney-resigns-barron/
