That is one aspect I agree with, call people creators, shot creator, playmaker..... Everyone is so enamored with the word PG. That is probably the thing that posters want to talk out everything, sometimes just watch and let it sink in.
No I'm not missing anything, you're changing "your point" to something completely different every time you're shown to be completely wrong. It's pathetic.
After reading many of the comments, the question is what exactly do CF fans want Reed to do to contribute to the starting unit? Scoring? Alpi, KD, Amen, and Bari have already shown that they are capable of producing more than enough offense to consistently win. Passing, Alpi has already shown how effective and efficient Senhub is. If one observed the opponents in the past two games, they were focused on stopping Alpi from scoring which gave Alpi a myriad of options from the top of the key. He was able to see over the defense and was able to distribute well from that position to open shooters and Amen cutting to the basket. And Reed, he contributed to the spacing because he seemed to be looked at by the defense as a legitimate 3 point threat, so someone was always shadowing him. KD in the second game just enhanced the ball movement and shooting efficiency of the whole team. Reed was able to influence ball movement when he rarely, if at all, walked up the ball on offense. He was always looking forward and quickly passed to Alpi in the high post who then initiated the offense that confused defenders. Reed does not demand the ball and pound it like JG and FVV would do. It allowed for more passing and ball movement when the primary ball handler was not holding on to the ball too long. As for Reed's 3 point shooting average, he actually shot 3 of 7 since his 8th shot was a desperation heave to beat the shot clock. It was blocked. So, his average would be about 42 to 43 per cent which is way above league average. In summary, I think what Reed is doing, for now, is adequate for the kind of stocked offense that the team has. It is obvious that most of the shots will be taken by KD, Alpi, Amen, and Bari. It is good that their PG does not demand the ball to be effective, but he is a constant threat with his ability to shoot so he has already shown that he helped the spacing on offense. He has some work to do on the defensive side, but he is not a bad defender either. So, what do the fans want him to do to stay in the starting unit?
It seems that Reed is currently trying to cement his foothold as a 3 point specialist, ball Handling, and defensive combo guard. If he can get all 3 phases, it will be a massive win for the Rockets. Albeit, though he looked overmatched in his rookie season, leading many to start spewing the proverbial draft-bust label, it’s well publicized that Reed has the Rocket coaches giddy. Is it a bluff or is it real? But I tend to think that if he can sport a 42% 3 point accuracy, he will have a prominent role as a point guard or even as a combo guard (if his ball handling is sus).
Very good question! And we probably won't know the answer until they start playing. But as of now, I want to not feel as though the Rockets are playing at a disadvantage with him on the court, if that explains it? Meaning he is bringing something to the starting lineup other than being a passer to KD, Alpi, Amen, and Jabari, in addition to not being a liability on defense. If he can ava 10 and 5 with this lineup....Im good!
I think we get Ime’s answer tonight. I am in the give Reed the nod for the first few games until DFS returns camp, but I think Ime will eventually settle on a starting (and finishing) lineup that is a great defensive lineup. Reed will have to be much better at point of attack defense to be the starter/closer at point guard/combo guard.
I think tonight they experiment with double bigs, which will probably be what they go with in game one vs the thunder, but i expect Reed to start most games in the early season
Shoot 3s at above league average level, properly space the floor, not be a liability on defense, handle the ball well against aggressive defenses, make connective passes. You may think the above should be easy, but Reed has not yet shown he can do all these consistently. The flashes get fans to be enamored with upside, but consistent production is what get you on the court.
Sure. But who among the Rockets, aside maybe from Alpi only recently, have done all of the above consistently? There is so much talk about Amen being a superstar in the making, but has he proven yet that he can shoot? The FO folks have been enamored with Reed openly and have praised his "flashes", and I agree with them without being enamored. I am, in fact, a little skeptical about Reed's chances of developing under Ime, but I want to give it the benefit of the doubt and just hope that he is able to help the team get to the next level. I don't know about being enamored with a player or a sports team. The NBA is an entertainment business, and I treat it as such just like the NFL and MLB.
Well, if Reed has the length of Jabari or the athleticism of Amen, then no, he doesn't need to do all the things I talk about. Hypothetically, if Reed comes out playing DPOY level defense to start the season and get to the basket at will, but only shoot 33% from 3? Yeah, I'd be fine with that. But we all know that's not happening so why do you even bother with the comparison?
I expect them to experiment more with the double big as well. At a minimum, Capela and KD need more reps because the double big looked awful the first two preseason games.
Capela needs more floor time both with and without Alpi. He's looks really rusty out there and needs to work out the kinks.
Rusty is one way of looking at Capela's performance... I hope it is just needing to knock off some Rust and getting some more reps with the current players.
Whatever Reed is, I think he will be a consistent scorer and passer who won’t make mistakes. It’s like when Rondo was with Boston when he had Pierce and Allen and Garnett. Reed has Durant, Sengun, Amen and Jabari. I am hoping we let Reed start. He doesn’t have to be a “PG” but he can be whatever he wants to be and I think he will be a good fit whatever it is and I’m rooting for him because I think he will be great for us.
