Limiting message size, setting of the Internet gateway

How can I change the limit, I have an NT 4.X server, any instructions? Please be detailed. I'm knew at this.

And why might I Not want to change it? Does it give me some kind of protection to limit file size going out.

Simple thing I want to do is send a Wave file to a friend. Far too large. Bounced back to me.
