Reed is small and looks little out there. Just little D energy on the court.

JD looks like he would help a team in win now mode like we are.

    thoughts?

Until now, he's been more of a small shooting guard than a point guard (one assist?!!).

This will be OJT for him. Obviously I'd prefer someone you don't have to "Hatteberg", especially when we had our eyes on a championship run; but Giambi ain't coming back (not this season, anyway).

This is prime Clutchfans. A D-League guy has one hot preseason game now he's the answer over the no 3 overall pick last year. Lol. Lets hope they both contribute.

Same idiot always make the same idiotic threads.
JD is shorter than Reed and less athletic.
But of course, we know why Op would want him to start.

JD's shorter (ie, his head is lower) but in every other way he's physically longer and less undersized. It's actually pretty drastic

    JD Davison - standing reach 8'3.5", Wingspan 6'6.5", heigh w/o shoes 6' 0.5", vert 37"

    Reed Sheppard - standing reach 7'9", Wingspan 6'3.25", height w/o shoes 6' 1.75", vert 42"

So Reed's head is higher, but he reaches over half a foot lower than JD, so Reed's athleticism doesn't really do much but overcompensate for his historically tiny reach. Like t-rex arms tiny. JD's 37" vert actually puts his jumping reach higher than Reed's too, because he doesn't have to first make up 6.5 inches to be at his start position (like Reed does.) Effectively, Reed has a 42 inch vert that only allows him to reach 1.5" LOWER than a guy who's over an inch shorter. Reed's historically bad size makes his vertical leap mostly functionally worthless. Sorry to break it to you.

I understand the sentiment. He's just kind of a non-factor out there most of the time. He really needs to show something in these early games. Honestly, if he's not a great shooter, there's not much reason to have him out there at all. I'm all for giving him the minutes to prove he has it though.

It doesn't always work like that - but yes, JD is longer and there are advantages to that. The one position where that can somewhat be neutralized is point guard. Sheppard is more explosive than JD, gets off the ground quicker, which can help him finish on drives and avoid having his shot blocked... Sheppard is also elite at quick cuts off screens and scoots better; which is why Sheppard will be a good offensive player if his shoot is every consistent. He can get himself in a position to get a good shot off.

JD is longer and appears to have quicker feet - but slower hands.

I will be thrilled if JD becomes a diamond in the rough and starter, I don't really care which of them takes the job and runs with it - but Sheppard has the higher upside, but so far he hasn't "proved it" and at some point he will need to do that if he wants to avoid being a 12th man or overseas breaking Jimmer Fredette's scoring records in Asian leagues going against 5'5" guys named "Lon"

Oh i'm not arguing there, I'm just reiterating a point to somebody who argued vehemently that Reed was massively undersized (which his reach for his height is historically bad) and is now trying to deny it. I'd much rather we play Reed than JD, I think the ceiling is several tiers above, I'm just enjoying pointing out him trying to argue that Reed isn't undersized after literally spending hours arguing with me to prove he is lmao.

Yes. There have been players that have similar dimensions to Sheppard that have been very good - but yeah, I think everyone being honest has to wish his reach was another 5"-6" longer. His height and body I am not as worried about, I can tell he will end up having a strong core and base, and his height is small but he is basically a point guard. The length those isn't ever going to change.

That's the funny thing, i actually believe his reach is higher and he did game the combine to get a higher vert. He doesn't look to have historically bad reach, and his wingspan is proportionally too long compared to his standing reach when you look at everybody else in the league. But cmoak spent literal hours arguing to me that it's impossible for that to have occurred (even though me and Reed are essentially the same height, but I have a 4 inch longer wingspan and 7 inch longer max reach, seems impossible by the numbers) so he doesn't now get to act like Reed isn't hugely undersized reach-wise.
