I don’t think any guards in that era could even play in today’s nba. Guard play has improved vastly. Kenny wouldn’t start or play for any team including ours. Those guys could barely dribble had no bag and couldn’t finish at the rim. He could shoot wide open threes off passes from Hakeem and that’s it.
While I do agree with you in that the guard skillset has vastly improved, I made the post when our starting guards were Jalen and KPJ and SIlas was our coach leading us to yet another bottom-of-the-league finish. I was definitely feeling a little disenfranchised I still do think that if we just judge based on how he compared to his peers, Kenny Smith would've been the best guard on that 22-23 team.
Kenny Smith was good enough to play meaningful minutes on the only two championship teams in Rockets history. That's plenty good in my book. Even without that, he was a solid NBA player who brought things to the Rockets that no other player could. Who knows how the Orlando series goes if Kenny doesn't hit 7 threes, including the game-tying one? I don't think enough people in this thread actually watched the OP's video--or saw him play regularly.
Yeah, that is really an absurd statement. Jordan, Drexler, Miller, Zeke, Payton, Stockton, Dumars, Price, Harper, Theus, Magic, Moncrief, Alvin, Fat, Kevin J, Hardaway--even guys like Nate McMillan, Rolando Blackmon, and Paul Pressey would get big minutes today.
Yeah, saying 90s players wouldn’t be in today’s NBA is ridiculous. We are all rightfully excited about Amen Thompson, but in many ways, prime Clyde Drexler was a comparable player. Not quite as long, but similar speed, quickness, leaping ability, agility, and finishing ability. Similarly dominant in the open court.
