Paredes can hopefully give you 60-80 games at 2B, 10-15 at 1B to spell Walker, 20 at 3B to spell Correa (142 games for Correa would be a very healthy season), and 20 or so at DH. Altuve should be limited to 130 games or so at his age. Let’s say 60-70 at 2B, 30 at LF and 20-30 at DH. Yordan gets 100 at DH, 40-45 in LF. More important to protect Yordan with games at DH than Altuve. if Paredes can’t play 2B, yeah Walker needs to be dealt.
He certainly was a bad offensive player for the first half of the season. He was solid in the second half overall - so I have some optimism in him next season. Having said that - if they deal him so Paredes can play 1st, I will be fine with that too.
His september was awful. He had 6 home runs to make his slugging % look better but 5 of them were meaningless. Lipstick on a pig. He struck out 31 times in 90 at bats. He had a .277 on base %. He had one stretch at the end where he had risp in like 7 straight at bats and mustered 1 rbi. It killed us. And he looked despondent while striking out badly in many crucial at bats down the stretch. He earned his money in july and August but did not come close in the other 4 months. I am very nervous about Walker next year. I hope he bounces back and is a good hitter for more than a 3rd of the season.
Did't Diaz have like whole season with that kind of on base % and all stats saying he is taking worse and worse AB's from 2023 -> 2024 -> 2025. One factor must be that he was unknown 2023, but when oppo sees him as HR threat now and swinging at everything he just won't get pitches to hit. Instead of adjusting and forcing pitchers to zone we keep heralding our wonderful agressiveness. Irritates me to no end that we keep justifying no aproach no preparing for mid pitchers with stats of early count damage league wide and agressiveness. Bit like I don't get you to listen and work so let's explain this crap this way and celebrate those HR we run into as aproach victory when they are just prove we have some power in team and when you throw enough balls to wildly moving water mill like bats ...some balls will get bumped out of the park. Dana and Joe saying "we are built to win" and elevating what we have now(blaiming injuries for everything) sounds like improving singular players, taking look how we prepare pre game or changing aproach even 1% is not on the menu coming off/next season. Joe will mumble in ST something about getting better with baserunning, stealing prevention and basics but probably the most they will do is just say that same thing in clubhouse and "we are better than 2025" and circle j*rk looking at back of baseball cards. Even with established stars, improving and making changes should not be off the table. First thing Shildt did landing San Diego was he fought and worked to get senior players buy in for improving basics. Yes they don't have a ring yet but that is also quite the division and National league past few years. Even trying to compete against Dodgers with broke a*s team and horrible contracts is well done. Cardinals basics bb fell off the cliff right away when clown Marmol stepped in. Also Arenado and Goldy started complaining there is no leaders. I know Im mostly complaining but it's because I think we could be so much better and just frustrated that we seem to just be on cruise control saying how good we are instead of doing the hard work and remembering what made players good to begin with. Maybe to get new start we need that extended bad run, new manager and new players still being hungry to prove themselves. We been mentally sucking each others c*cks for a while now and whole org should maybe think is this the way to go.
SS Pena 2B Altuve LF Alvarez 3B Correa DH Paredes 1B Walker C Diaz RF Smith CF Meyers/Cole The reality is someone is going to get hurt at some point. That's going to open up DH opportunities for other guys. Correa out, Paredes to 3B. Pena out, Correa to SS and Paredes to 3B. Walker out, Paredes to 1B. I would play Parades at 1B some and rest Walker maybe 1 game a week. Altuve can be taken out as a defensive sub after his 3rd or 4th plate appearance. I don't have a problem with Yordan in LF every home game and then some on the road depending on park and who is pitching for us.
Off-season plan Sign over the hill first baseman Line up three Tommy John surgeries Sign failed, former top prospect, Kyle Lewis probably
The Astros clearly do not want Alvarez in the field that much in spite of whether you don’t have a problem with it. They demonstrated that with the Altuve to left experiment. Your idea absolutely destroys our defense, which has potential to be special. Defense is also key to our pitching staff which is losing our one predominantly ground ball pitcher. Outfield defense with Cole, Myers, and Smith would be outstanding. The most plausible solution is to move Walker, place Paredes at 1b and Altuve at 2b. Altuve at 2b hurts our infield defense, but the other 3 infield positions would be outstanding. Walker was a big minus on the offensive side of the ball and will be a year older. The problem is finding a taker that won’t cost you too many valuable assets. If you can re-coup half his salary it can go toward filling the holes in our pitching staff.
Those homers count though. The second half of the season he finished with an 800 OPS, which is pretty good when you consider his glove. I will always worry about him as a hitter - even when they signed him, I said I viewed him as a 6 hitter in a top line up, he just isn't a really good natural hitter. He battles and fights and scrapes and hits with power, so when it is all said in done he has been solid. In his career he has played 7 seasons with heavy playing time - he has had 2 total seasons with an OPS of around .700 and the other 5 times it has been around .800. I am fine trading him and moving Paredes to first - but I think it is more likely true than not true that he will be around an OPS of .800 and have a WAR or around 2-4.
You can have those homers. Fools gold he had 2 good months, 4 bad ones, and he makes 20 mil. 177 k’s/ 40 walks If he can be moved, I hope he is.
What kind of prospects do you think Dana will have to add to get rid of all of Walkers money. I dont consider a guy like Dezenzo to be a AAA guy when injuries hit. In fact Dezenzo might be in play for a 1B/OF spot if Dana just decides to move on from Walker if Dana just decides to add pitching. Although I'm really looking for the Dana to add a guy with speed to LF though. I guess I'm higher on Dezenzo than most around here though. Wonder what it would take to trade for Daylen Lile from the Nats, Young switch hitter with speed and the Nats need young pitching. Pena SS Parades 1B Alvarez DH Correa 3B Alutve 2B Diaz C Cole CF Smith RF Dezenzo LF
I'm good with moving Walker to save money to add pitching and putting Parades at 1B. Then moving Meyers/non tender guys and giving Cole a chance in CF and Dezenzo a chance in LF. Then add a vet OF in case injuries hit. I wish Chas was this guy. But he's not.
If defense is so important, help me understand why you want to replace the gold glove 1B with a guy who has played there the equivalent of 44 games over 6 seasons... I don't mind him getting reps at 1B but there everyday????? Yordan in LF at home doesn't destroy our defense. He can be DH on road and Paredes can get more 1B reps with Walker getting a day off.
Generally 3rd basemen can make the transition to 1B fairly easily. But yeah, definitely can’t put Yordan there
Yeah, the Stros used to be considered a cutting edge franchise. How do they get back to being a franchise like this.
This Paredes was great at 3b. Bagwell was a 3b before he was a 1b. Walker had a down year with the glove and bat. I don’t hate him, but you need to solve for Paredes’ position on this team. Alvarez, with his injury concerns is not a candidate for LF. Altuve is an issue we can’t really do anything about.
I have no idea what you are talking about. It took an historic amount of injuries to knock us out of the playoff race that didn't end until the last week. You guys are spoiled.
I wouldn't say he was great. He was very very solid. His range is still pretty poor, but is okay because Pena's range is ridiculously good.
I think many people here have record blindness and are not seeing the lack of talent on the offense and defense. The Astros had an anomaly year in the sense that they played well above their talent level and to think this is going to be the same next year and all we need to do is add to it is a recipe for disaster. The Astros have an aging first baseman, journeymen at second base, a star short stop, another past his prime 3rd baseman (Correa, who the Giants voided a contract for because of a lingering injury) and nobody in the outfield that can hit 25 home runs a year, at least not yet. No everyday left fielder. No quality left hand bat. No talent at the number 2 pitcher's spot. We have a Star at dh (if healthy) and a star/really solid -- closer, set up man. And some arms in the bull pen sprinkled in. Our farm system is nearly the worst in the majors at this point. And then we have the great Altuve, but that's not enough. This team needs a major overhaul, is what I am saying. And it is only going to get worse.
