23.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 4.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks Thats solid for 2 games, and he got pulled out of respect.
It'll play out in the next several days. Hopefully he shines and is a great complement to Amen in the backcourt. We'll soon see. Go Rox!
He should come off the bench until he feels comfortable and demonstrates that he’s developed enough to handle a bigger role. It would be a big mistake to start him right off the bat and I’m 100% positive that will not happen. Regardless of what role Reed ultimately ends up in Aaron Holliday is going to be really important, especially the first half of the season. Can’t put too much on Reed’s shoulders too early.
I disagree with this. There is more pressure on Reed if he comes off the bench as he’s forced into the primary ball handler role and has to generate offense. That is what he struggled at last year. He absolutely should start because as the 5th option he will destroy other teams. He’s the ultimate team player. Makes right reads plays good team defense. He needs to be out there with the other 4 guys who can take pressure off him. We didn’t draft him to be Steve Nash. He doesn’t have to be awesome in the starting lineup. He just has to hit shots.
With Amen/KD/Sengun being ball handlers, I could see Holiday/Amen/KD/Bari/Sengun as the starters opening day. Reed/Okogie/DFS/Tari/Adams off the bench when healthy.
If not Reed, who else? Holiday? According to ESPN positions, FVV is literally the only listed PG on the team? :/ It has to be Reed or Holiday and while I think Holiday is capable, he has maxed out his potential. So I would prefer to see how Reed fares. Maybe you start Holiday if he's having a better camp and give Reed the chance to take the spot by mid season. Amen will take the ball up most the time. Reed should be running around Curry style. Coming off screens for jumpers and occasionally running the offense. Sengun is the only proven, natural playmaker besides maybe KD. And it's not like KD is a prolific playmaker. Will have to run the initial offense through him unless Reed or Amen step up their ability to breakdown defenders on the dribble. Guys will pressure Reed and they'll sag on Amen.
How much? Just kidding. Ime will have to be patient with Reed and maybe Amen to start the season. Huge role changes for both guys.
I think Reed should start...the offense will initiate through KD, Amen, and Sengun. He'll get more open looks than last year when we had Jalen and D. Brooks who weren't commanding any doubles. As a young player who can shoot, getting Reed in rhythm early in the season is a great confidence builder and serve us well long-term for success this season.
Reed is competing with Holiday and Okogie for not just the starting role but play time. Unless you count Durant as a backcourt player, we simply don't have a lot of guys playing there after FVV. The competition is pretty weak. If Reed can't beat out those two guys by mid season, you can call him a bust. There has to be a reason why the FO was banking on him. We know Holiday can shoot open shots but can't make play and can't create. We know Okogie can defend but can't shoot. They are hoping that Reed can both shoot and create and is not a liability on defense.
Reed has the starting job if he performs well in the pre-season. He will get his 20 mins regularly even if he is benched after a poor start. He has too much potential as a spot up shooter not to be in the rotation. If he can’t hammer out a role by the trade deadline, he will be either traded or demoted to third stream. If the rest of the team stays healthy, the Rockets will be all in this year. Tic Tok as Codman would say. They will not throw Durant’s first year away on a second year player.
Let's see how he does in preseason before deciding whether he's ready to start. Hopefully, he's improved enough to begin to take over.
I'm a big Shep supporter, but I voted no. Amen should get first crack at starting PG. Bring Reed off the bench for 20-25 minutes and let him find his rhythm against other team's benches. With Adams setting picks he's going to get open looks and let's see how his game evolves in the first 20 games or so.
Holiday might get to start. Doesn't mean Holiday is a better player, but he is a very consistent shooter (career 38% from deep, 39% as a Rocket), a decent defender, and has veteran experience. We have zero playmaking off the bench if Sheppard starts. Reed can come in like Harden/Ginobili did and light up second units, at least I hope he's on that level. Thabo started over Harden at OKC, but Harden was the primary playmaker off the bench and got most of the minutes at SG. I personally think Amen and Reed are the perfect complementary backcourt, so if Reed is capable of being a 35mpg starter I'd prefer that. It just depends on how ready he is.
Neither Reed or Holiday are playmakers. Their role is to bring up the ball and hand it off to initiators and spot up. Amen, Sengun, and KD will initiate the offense in the half court. I expect before the end of the year, Amen will get the lion’s share of that role, but it will be pretty even to start the year and different based on matchups. Ime cannot be formulaic this year.
Reed is too young and too talented to put a limit on already. Holiday has been a spot up player for seven seasons, I'm confident he is at his ceiling. Reed's got infinitely more potential as both a scorer and passer. Reed struggled his rookie year, but that doesn't mean his role is reduced to spotting up forever or even just this year. If that's all the Rockets thought he was capable of he wouldn't have been drafted 3rd. They probably thought he'd be at least a Payton Pritchard type player, who is the current sixth man of the year. I think Reed will carve out a bigger role than you give him credit for. The door is wide open for him this year.
He has not sow I hope you are right, but he has not shown the ability to be a playmaker against starters. I’m not pigeon holing him forever, but I doubt he will magically become an effective starting playmaker this year. I think that is a legitimate concern, not hate as some would have it.
In the absolute minority that thinks he should start lol. Reed is obviously going to be very good and it’s comical how few are not seeing it still.
