I understand it as a symbolic gesture, but I question the wisdom of it from a tactical standpoint. They are giving Israel a pretext to (illegally) annex Gaza and the West Bank, which will happen with US backing. And Europe/Canada /Australia will be powerless to stop it.

The UK created this mess with the Balfour declaration and they have no means to fix it. Oops.

Saying ‘Islam is awful’ is not only ignorant but also deeply unfair. Islam is a rich and diverse faith followed peacefully by billions around the world. Condemning an entire religion because of a few extremists or political conflicts is nothing but prejudice. If we want real progress, we need to challenge stereotypes, not reinforce them.

Palestinians deserve international recognition by Western powers like the UK and France because they have the right to self-determination and statehood. Recognition would affirm their political and human rights, help address longstanding injustice, and promote peace and stability in the Middle East. It would also enable Palestinians to participate fully in global diplomacy and development, advancing equality and dignity.

    Quran:

    [
And We declared for the Children of Israel in the Scripture: You will commit corruption on earth twice, and you will rise to a great height.

When the first of the two promises came true, We sent against you servants of Ours, possessing great might, and they ransacked your homes. It was a promise fulfilled.

Then We gave you a turn against them, and We supplied you with wealth and children, and We made you more numerous.

    7. If you work righteousness, you work righteousness for yourselves; and if you commit evil, you do so against yourselves. Then, when the second promise comes true, they will make your faces filled with sorrow, and will enter the Temple as they entered it the first time, and will utterly destroy all that falls into their power

Perhaps your Lord will have mercy on you. And if you return, We will return. And We made Hell a prison for the unbelievers]

    Genesis 32:28
28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

They have the right to attack their neighbor country and their neighbor country has the right to attack back until they are defeated

Palestine ends up being a powerhouse at basketball would be a preferable outcome.

Not opposed, but wondering what this really does given the current siege on Gaza and the overall lack of organized Palestinian leadership.

Also, from a negotiation standpoint, it might have behooved the UK and the rest to make the release of all remaining hostages for Oct 7 as a condition for recognizing statehood.

Imagine how much better Palestine would be if they had been able to make peace in the 1990s.
Afghanistan is a recognized country whether it is the Taliban in power or the now fallen provisional government.

Governments rise and fall but the peoples generally remain baring genocide (with dozens of genocides seen over the last 100 years).

To do so would imply that Hamas' hostage-taking was a state-sponsored one and that Hamas therefore had some legitimacy as a government in Palestine, which they expressly wanted to reject. With UK's framing, Hamas' terrorist acts are merely criminal and not sovereign self-defense. Hostages probably don't care for logical niceties like that, but at this point I'm not sure anything will get hostages out alive anyway. Netanyahu cut bait a long time ago.

I am not sure if Palestine really wants a state. Correct me if I am wrong by in 2000 Israeli PM Barak offered statehood which included all of the Gaza Strip. This offer was not accepted. In 2008, Israel made a similar offer to Palestine which was not accepted. On the surface these two look like great offers for s state and eventually recognition by other countries. By not accepting, it really makes me question if long-term peach with Israel is a Palestinian goal or if they have other motives.
