Right now I'm in the of middle nowhere in Pres'quile, Maine, and thought I'd give a shout out to all my BBS bretheren. Though there ain't much of a "nightlife" here in Northern Maine, it has awesome scenery and some great lakes. Tomorrow I'm off to QuebeCity and Montreal. before heading back home to Toronto "home of the craptors", Ontario. So I'm itching to find time when I go home and get in the draft talk. Lates. Azim, You go boy! The wife and I will be heading to Moosehead Lake for two weeks at the end of August. It will be our third summer in Maine. We absolutly LOVE it there. I'm trying to convince the wife to buy a piece of land there. Can't wait. Have fun the rest of your trip and make it back home safe. ------------------
McMarkyMark Maine is absolutely gorgeous,but for my money ........ it's NOVA SCOTIA, Canada. You have all the same amenities, if not more than Northern/Central Maine. Great historic area, fishing villages and craft stores galore. Sleepy litttle towns that are right out of a book. You can have ocean front property, the friendliest people in the entire earth, scenery from paradise and the US dollar is presently worth $1.44 . I just bought 3.65 acres on a running (flyfishing) trout/salmon river, one mile from the Atlantic, secluded but with one end fronting a little-used but paved road, for $4000 CDN. That's about $2550.00(US) including closing costs. Surrounded by Crown (Federal) Land it is full of whitetail deer, a decent population of black bear, partridge, fox, etc .... . Easily accessed by plane (Halifax, Yarmouth, Sydney, Moncton(NB)), major highway (Trans Canada), Ferry (Via Portland or Bar Harbour), or train (AmTrack To CNR/CP Rail). The pleasant weather (Yep, warmer than Maine too, I kid you not, look it up!), low crime, and just being able to say you own land in a foreign country is icing on the cake. LOL ------------------
mc mark, Yes, Maine is an awesome place. For nature buffs who want to get away from the city, its ideal. Moosehead Lake . . . I'm not that familiar with the state yet, where is that in relation to Bangor/Portland/New Brunswick border? Do you usually fly down, or drive? Hope you have an awesome time with "the wife". french dude, It would be unfair for me to compare Nova Scotia to Maine, 'cause I haven't had the opportunity to truly roam Maine, but I can attest with you with first-hand expereince, the Canadian Maritimes, particularly Nova Scotia, is truly unique. What sets it apart from most of the continent is the genuine sincerity of its people. Of course, its historic landmarks (oldest "civilized" part of North America), and its awe-inspiring beauty don't hurt. My parents lived in Halifax for a few years before my time, and I've since gone back several times. I'm not sure if you or any of the posters here have gone to Cape Breton, but its definatly worth exploring. Its too bad the local economy is so bad now and dependent on the fishing industry (NewFoundland especially), even though government has made strides over the past decades in diversifying it. I spent a day in Quebec City as well, and after 6 years, I almost forgot how colourful it is. Walking through Old Quebec with its European atmosphere and its cobbled-stoned streets is a thing of beauty. No doubt, the french ladies made the walk a whole lot more worthwile. Azim, Moosehead lake is about an hour's drive north east of Bangor. Its roughly 40 miles from the Canadian border almost dead center of the state. It's 40 miles long and about 20 miles wide at its widest point. At the base of the lake is a small town called Greenville. This is where we stay. But on the north of the lake is a road called "the Golden road" Which I think the Grateful Dead made famous in one of their songs. It's just beautiful. Last year we were there for 8 days and saw 4 people. Lots of fishing, moose watching, naked lake swimming. Just soul cleansing. It's about a 9 1/2 hour drive from New York City. So it's not that bad. OP, Thanks alot for the 411 on NOVA SCOTIA, I made the mistake of showing this thread to my wife and now we "have" to go and spend a few days there. Its all your fault! ------------------
