I like the M’s farm system a lot, but not sure how many of them will be impact MLB players. They certainly are favorites with some scouts. I would personally trade some of those guys if I were running the M’s for impact big leaguers.
Zion Williamson and Charles Barkley come to mind. Robert Tractor Trailer could really move and was nimble too. Orlando Pace in the NFL. In the big leagues, Rick Reuschel really stands out and Fernando Valenzuela too. Fernando wasn’t a burner but he was extremely nimble.
We had a catcher that led the league in triples. One of the funnest thing about that season of fun. Loved Gattis.
Was my first guess at first too, and he was an exceptional athlete. He was a bad base stealer, but was supposedly fast. I read as a kid where one of his Yankees teammates said that Babe was the fastest Yankee when they would sprint.
Honestly, if Hader ends up being out for the season or longer..... coupled with the Walker, Abreu, Javier, McCullers and maybe even Alvarez contracts.... I wouldn't be shocked if the Astros decide to change how they approach contract extensions. I could see the Astros owner and GM deciding to spend more money and resources in the draft, international scouting and player development and taking money away from contract extensions. The idea being that they can both play and trade the players they develop. Especially with the Astros already having strengths there. We are already seeing more draft picks or slot money being traded, the Astros could also use that. I don't think they would go full scorched earth, but I could see them making shorter but richer deals for pitching or the strategically fill a lingering hole.
I am really hoping the next CBA allows for full trading of draft picks, could be a huge boon for the Astros. I would be in favor of Jim Crane instating a limit of $50M total commitment to any single contract and dumping all excess resources into scouting, analytics, player development, front office/coaching retention, and injury prevention/treatment research.
They need to be trying to extend position players earlier and lean into their ability to develop pitchers. The Yordan injury is unfortunate but still don't regret that extension. Didn't regret the Bregman one or the Altuve. Had they been able to get something done with Tucker, they wouldn't have regretted that. Likewise with Pena. There's always going to be a risk with pitchers and position players that are 34+ years old at the start of the season after signing.

They need to go the other way imo and offer longer extensions during rookie year. 10/100 should be the standard offer for anyone they they think is going to be good that’s like 24 or under. if they say no then you manipulate the **** out of their service time- get 6.9 years of club control instead of 6, and trade them with a year or two remaining for younger talent and move on. That’s another way to keep the books relatively clean (especially if the have the discipline to make the 10/100 not back loaded) and not too dangerous in any one player if you miss. You could do that 6 times and hit on 3 and miss on 3 and it’s the functional equivalent of always carrying around an Abreu contract while always having 3 all stars on the arb portion of their contracts. Smith should have had an extension offered like that. if the lightbulb “really” turns on for Matthews or melton. If the 17 year old Alvarez kid is knocking down the door at 20 to be a big leaguer. Guys like that. Ullola is obviously a given, right @Snake Diggit?
There are no prospects in Houston’s system I would offer $100M/10yrs to. Cam Smith would have been one but there’s no way he would have taken it.
