I originally made an off hand comment about how last season I thought of Sengun's future to have a Yao type of career, multiple all-stars, best player on a 2nd round team, etc. But last year's shooting slump is clouding that projection. It wasn't received well because it was apparently insulting to compare Sengun with Yao and that Sengun has already surpassed Yao. And I realized it was not a conversation I need to continue so I stopped responding. But yeah that's the origin of that comparison.
It's not really a fair comparison. Yao was a 7'6 monster that is a system on both offense and defense by simply existing in the post. Yao in that era is basically a cheat code if you let him shoot a fadaway in the post. He was essentially fronted/doubled in every possession in 2009 even with Gasol/Bynum/Odom guarding him
Sengun is only 23 he still has a lot of untapped potential. While his efficiency has dipped last year I credit to the backcourt trio of Jalen, FVV and Amen...prob the worst shooting trio backcourt among contenders. Now we have KD so that should help him a lot, from Batman he becomes Robin. From SGA he becomes Chet. Much less opponent pressure on him, I bet he has a monster season. Sengun has something quite unique, he has really good ball handling/dribbling skills and he is every balanced and coordinated on the floor. Last season the dude routinely took the ball outside the 3 pt line and drove it in like a guard. He was doing. hesis and cross over before taking it down to the post. It makes him a hard cover on the court cuz he can ball handle against bigger guys or take it to the post against smaller guys. And because KD is here, he wont have the scenario where he gets past Draymond and then Curry and Jimmy B are waiting for him at the rim. Now teams cant focus half the lineup to just stopping him cuz KD gonna demand a double team of his own. The other thing is just more familiarity with Ime system. Last season Ime unveiled his double big and terror twins lineups, he tried lots of unconventional stuff so this year Sengun will be more used to blitzing people on defense and playing PF on offense.
Yeah, I responded to someone who said comparing to Yao was a "low bar" as if it was insulting to Sengun by putting him in the same sentence with Yao.
Right, and Yao likely couldn't exist in the current era because he'd be too much of a liability on defense since teams would force him out of the post. That's what makes it so hard to compare players in different eras.
Bruh.. Scola defeated prime Kobe, prime Curry, prime Lebron ... with measly argentinians. Sengun can't even defeat Draymond having 5 franchise players.
If Sengun gets more efficient he’s a super star, if he stays the same he did last year he’s still good enough to be a second or third star on a championship team. But either him or Amen taking a leap on offense will make the difference between us having championship potential this year.
yeah so frustrating to see him miss those same easy shots that he can make efficiently the previous seasons dunno the reason maybe all that strength training, or saving his energy for the rest of the game, or laziness, or over confidence. what ever it is hope it gets fixed.
Sengun had his worst season in terms of efficiency by far last year. Even the shots around the basket that used to be his main strength weren't going down very well. Staying the same as last year would be a big disappointment because he was well below league average. I don't think he can be a second star on a championship team at that efficiency, maybe not even a third best player. Looking at the top teams around the league none of them had a high volume scorer on below 55 TS%. Thankfully the two seasons prior Sengun's efficiency was just fine. He doesn't need to make a giant leap, he just needs to get back to where he was before.
