A friend and I drove down to Tallahassee to work on the legal protection team for the Kerry campaign. We left on Friday morning so we had the whole of Saturday and Sunday plus Monday and Tuesaday to work on the campaign. We did straight forward political work on Sat Sunday and Monday, except for going to a seminar on Fla Election Law. On Tuesday we went to two counties Hamilton County and Gadsen County. Gadssen was one of the counties where the election was stolen in 2000. 12% of the votes, over 2,000 ballots were spoiled in a county where it is close to 90% African American. Quite an interesting experience. Our presence was appreciated, but quite frankly the local folks were so organized and out around the poll in Gadsen county there would have been violence if they attempted massive spoiling of ballots like last time. Tallahassee was quite a nice college town. State capital, large universities, like Austin used to be. On Monday evening we had the pleasure of going to the last leg of the Michael Moore "Slacker Tour" to get out the vote" or whatever it was called. Over 8,000 Florida State Students and also FAMU which is the historically black university a couple of blocks away. Guest appearances by three diplomats who have resigned over the Iraq Fiasco, the founder of the Iraqi Veterans Against the War, and Rosanne O"Donnel ?a comedian who I am not that familar with. Quite an experience. For those who are depressed by the election which will lead to so many more US and Iraqis dying for naught, I recommend trying actual activism rather than cynicsm and depression. I sure hope the young folks at the Moore event can keep the faith. Peace. PS I'll be watching the Rockets later on TIVO. Link
Glad you participated in the process, well done. I hope you enjoyed the experience, sounds like you got to get up close and personal with our election. Nice. DD
