My first take is that that is brutal to sign for half of slot. My next thought is that the Astros must have done the math and figured that they could pay that much and still sign the gets (the over slots). If needed the Astros could found some one to sign for $10K to make the over sots money work.
Most teams, I know the Stros do, have a basic pre-draft agreement with everyone taken in the first 10-ish rounds. Some of the unsigneds may just be waiting to see how much money is left over after the over/under slot signings.
Are we getting all these guys to sign because they see we are moving everybody up to bigs in record time? Even the dudes we trade away seem to end up playing (Wagner, Loperfido) quickly.
Figured their 10th rounder was signing for next to nothing. Wonder where a lot of these 10th rounders would actually get taken if not for the slot giveback element.
undrafted high school catcher! Kienan O'Doherty is a reporter for the Press Democrat, a local paper serving Sonoma and Napa counties in Northern California. The Astros hit NorCal again for an undrafted high schooler.
