Maybe we can get Malcolm Brogdan orAlec Burks for cheap...how much remaining cap space the Rockets have before hitting the first apron?
Those are 2 solid vets we could target who doesn't need consistent playing time, but could be used sparingly to fill in for KD...I expect KD to play around 65 games, dont need him to play 82 games - we need him fresh for the playoffs!

Would he even be a starter here?

Doubtful. Pretty sure this is a hard pass on both sides.

Can’t do the deal you suggested bc of first apron limits, as a few folks here called out

but let’s say we are in December, we didn’t sign Tari to an extension, and Reed has struggled in the 3rd guard spot, I could see us exploring the option of trading for someone like White

Tari and Capela (likely to a third team) for White keeps us under the first apron and balances the team out. Hopefully we would have some assurances we could re-sign White in the $20-25M range after this year

    Lineup:
    FVV/Reed
    Amen/White
    KD
    Jabari/DFS
    Sengun/Adams

That seems unnecessarily harsh. Forget everything else in the trade. White replacing Tari would make us a better and deeper team. Our weak link right now is Reed as the primary backup guard. Regardless of whether Reed becomes legitimate in a couple of years, White is massively his superior on the basketball court. We have DFS, Jabari, KD, Amen that can all play SF/PF at a high skill level. We have Amen, FVV, and a second year guard who has potential as a backup guard that seems a year or two away.

Yeah, this is the kind of thing AI chatbots absolutely cannot handle because of the way they work. They don't actually have any ability to reason through logical steps and come to a conclusion, they just scoop up a bunch of data and regurgitate something they think is a likely answer by recombining it.

Why do people want to trade Tari? Gonna take a major leap this season. Why trade assets for Coby White AND pay him big money next yr (or lose him for nothing)?

Because the team is in win now mode and Reed is the weak link on making that happen. Tari is injury prone and will be RFA next year. He plays a position(s) that we are loaded at. Coby fills a glaring hole in our rotation, Tari does not. Coby would only cost a little bit more than a re-signed Tari. I like Tari and would like to keep him, but this team needs to be re-balanced.

you don’t spend assets to acquire a player and then pay them top dollar to keep them unless they are a star. Coby is gonna get paid his market value because he’s an UFA next year. And he’s gonna cost a lot more than Tari. I get your point that we need a point guard more than we need another wing, but consider the possibility that Reed turns out to be a good point guard. Probably unwise to give up on our #3 pick without a full season of consistent NBA minutes.

I like Coby White a lot btw.

Coby is going to get paid. Great offensively, but his lack of ability to guard up and lack of defensive awareness makes him a tough sell for me. He is in the Sabonis, Brandon Ingram category for me. He’s got skills to get paid while a team overlooks his flaws.

Maybe this isn’t fair, but there always seems to be a Kings or a Bulls team overpaying for offense. I don’t have a problem if these guys end up on reasonable contracts and you can get them for a few years. I’d fear his next contract compared to what the Rockets young players will likely be on.

Nah. If Tari slightly improves his 3PT% and has a healthy season he'll get offered $30m per season next summer. That's what OG Anunoby was worth in an older CBA half a decade ago - and OG makes very poor choices when he handles the ball just like Tari.

Why on earth would we attach a pick to get Coby White? As a straight up swap I'd consider it. We need White's backcourt offense more than we need Tari's wing defense at the moment.

OG is a much, much better 3P shooter than Tari. Significantly higher volume and percentage. Tari would have to take two major steps up as a shooter to get to his level. OG is also a proven starter. I don't see Tari getting offered $30M as a bench player with injury concerns, unless he takes a massive leap. His realistic best case would be something like Naz Reid, so a five year deal worth $25M. To get there he will have to improve substantially. Realistically, if he just repeats last season, he's going to be lucky to crack $20M AAV.

Not much... he's like a somewhat smaller, slightly less athletic, a tad bit higher IQ (still fairly low IQ), and slightly more efficient version of Jalen Green. Not a fan of low-IQ players and White reminds me of JLin sometimes in how he plays like a chicken with its head cut off.

I think you misunderstood the post. OG is $40m+ now and no one complains about his salary. This is compared to the injury-prone OG from Toronto so Tari's minor injury concerns are moot. You can say OG got better at shooting 3's sooner, but also Tari started as a much better defender, shot blocker and rebounder. OG had some motor issues early on as well.

OG would be paid more now because that was over half a decade ago. So it's not going to take as much output to get the same contract. All it will take is for Tari to shoot above 36% which is a minor uptick for him. Teams will throw that money at him and he's worth it. An excellent defender with excellent wingspan who can hit open 3's is a highly sought after commodity in the NBA. Coached up by Ime Udoka too. No one wants to let theirs go. These days you need more than one.

That's why I think it's a mistake to wait till restricted FA. To a team who doesn't have a single good 3&D wing, $30m is barely an overpay and beats waiting years to acquire one or develop one.
