He's not giving up the money on the last year of his contract. To think he will is crazy talk.

And he’ll more than likely tell the Astros no. His contract is guaranteed, he will not leave money on the table.

I'm sure he will be willing to retire if Crane pays off his contract.

What I meant was they would offer to pay his last year. If they really thought he was toast.

What was the deal with Strasburg and his retirement? He reached a deal with the Nationals. Does his money come off the books for them? Can McCullers retire after a settlement (Crane still pays him all the money) and then have his salary off the books giving them more room before they hit the tax line??

Or can he retire but then get hired as a coach or advisor for the amount he was owed???

Strasbourg was medical as far as I know and they agreed to a settlement I think his money comes off the books once it's completed in entirety

So yall expected Lance to come back from this LONG absence from multiple injuries and be consistently good right away?

The fact he has shown flashes of being good is a good sign. It was always gonna be rough and inconsistent this year, especially early on which is where we are

Lance and Cristian might be our 3rd option in the upcoming 2025 mlb playoffs? Which of Gordon, Gusto or Walter is our next 'un? Or next in line?

This is a reasonable take. But on the other hand, how many guys have come back after being out as long, laid 50% eggs over 10 starts, then went on to have consistent success at any point after that?

Carlos Beltran in a Press Conference when returning to the Astros said The No Trade Clause was the factor in him leaving. Drayton did not want to give the Full No Trade Clause the Mets were giving Beltran.
Looking back Carlos was regretful in leaving, he said. Carlos said Craig Biggio really helped him.
Astros 2004 Team was Special. 2005 Team needed Carlos Beltran when he left.

Lance is getting his contract money regardless… whether it be a lump sum, deferred, delayed, or just paid out as its currently structured.

The Astros can still look to not play him, DFA him, continue to play him, or switch up his role and the contract will have very little to do with any of those decisions.

Of course as of right now, the team doesn’t have a lot of pitching options besides him. Even when these guys start coming back… none of the rehab guys are going to be just unleashed without strings/restrictions. Maybe Arighetti, given the nature of his injury, but even then… he’s the least established/proven amongst all of them.

IMO Lance will be a long inning reliever, the starter cant go past 1 or 2 and he will be the guy to bridge the gap to the bullpen............I had high hopes for Lance and maybe he is better next year................

Maybe he will find the 3-4 MPH that he lost on his FB.

He can show flashes in Fayetteville or Corpus Christi... I don't need to see that charity case in Sugar Land.

Just treat McCullers starts as bullpen games where he opens in the first 2 innings or so.

They’re already sort of doing that by pairing him with Gusto.

Lance is also not like other “openers” that are effective only in a short stint… or only once through the order.

The biggest issue with Lance is his command, and you don’t know what it’s going to be till he’s in there. When it’s there, he can be effective for 5+. When its not there, its not there (This also effectively makes him ineligible for any bullpen role, unless it’s a game you need mop up duty that won’t impact the actual result).

Well not many have been out that long and came back so the list would be very short to begin with

    BUT

Many pitchers coming back from major surgery struggle a lot early on in the comeback, in fact most of them do

Spencer Strider is in the middle of his comeback year and in his first 5 starts (which only covered 25 innings) he had an era just under 6. Has started to look more like himself since then.

Crochet had the advantage of coming back late in 23 as a reliever (wasn't great) and still had 3 clunkers in his first 6 starts last year, gave up 5 in 4.2 innings, 7 in 3 innings and 5 in 4 innings...then went on to dominate

Jeff Springs had TJ in 23, came back last year with 4 really good starts and 3 really bad ones. Began this year with 4 awful starts out of his first 6, then has looked much more like the guy who dominated in 22 before the injury

The list of guys who struggle early on in a comeback is long

The fact that Lance already has starts where he struck out 12 in 6 innings (3 runs), another where he threw 6 shutout innings with 7 Ks and another just a week ago where he gave up 1 run in 6 innings at Dodger Stadium actually shows that after a long long layoff, he still has the ability to come up big

Also have to remember that even when Lance was dominant, many stayed frustrated with him because of the high pitch counts early on in games and not usually being able to go deep. That's just who he is

I think because so many had already written him off it's very easy to see a bad start and say "damn he is done"

I WANT Lance on the hill for a game 3 in a playoff series, especially with another 2.5 months to get ready. I'm not nearly as worried about Lance getting to where he needs to be as a pitcher as I am worried about Lance staying healthy. If he is healthy in October he will be ready to roll
