Weren’t they sh*tting on FEMA when Biden was President and vowing to defund and destroy it because it should be up to the states to handle their own natural disasters?

So lemme get this straight, they destroyed the NOAA and refused to upgrade the disaster response system in TX for YEARS resulting in the death of over a hundred people, and now FEMA that they have been trying to destroy is slow in its response. Idk when the mindless drones will wake up, but look at how little republicans care about their own constituents.

Trump took months to approve aid to Arkansas after it had been devastated by a storm, and he had initially DENIED their request. Huckabee Sanders had to beg for months

I had already gotten the memo that FEMA was out of the business of helping people, so I was more surprised that they did anything at all than I was that they showed up late and a dollar short.

Nope, it's true. One of the things you do in emergency response is set up contracts well before the disaster. When DOGE came in and cancelled contracts, those included some that were in place for response--often under call when needed contracts with private industry. Then there are the financial MOAs with other government entities. DOGE and Noem immediately implemented this ridiculous policy of the Secretary personally approving all these contracts and financial obligations because they are blinded by a weird ideology that made them suspicious of everything government. That and the priority for ICE created a backlog across all the departmental agencies with folks changing things around to make as many contracts as possible "emergencies" just to get them to the top of the pile. Well, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. It's an incredibly stupid way to run any org, much less one as large and operationally diverse as DHS. Unwieldy doesn't begin to cover it.

Search and Rescue is one of the key Emergency Support Functions in the National Response Framework which guides response to disasters in this country. DHS is the ESF Coordinator for search and rescue-that means they have the lead for the federal government and by extension, everyone. That there was not a call out for search and rescue teams to deploy by 0630 on 7/4 is not just a failing. It is a massive dereliction of duty.

So where was all of this expertise during Hurricane Helene? Where rural North Carolina suffered for months while FEMA played politics with the disaster response aid... You talk about ideology creeping into Noem's decision making, yet you ignore the hard evidence that showed that the FEMA administrators under Biden literally instructed response crews to avoid homes with Trump signs. Unreal.

So all of this "expertise" that you claim FEMA had before Trump... well, it's not a compelling argument. The fact of the matter is the agency needed an overhaul. FEMA has been bad for a long time and the status quo was not worth defending. You talk like it was a well-oiled machine -- in what alternate universe are you living in? Flood waters rising 40 feet in 2 hours in not something that can be guarded against. Trump's mission is to decentralize disaster response -- and take it out of the hands of the incompetent bureaucratic slobs in DC. I'm all for that. The DC labor force is as unproductive (and partisan) as one can find in America. Hard pass on putting disaster recovery in their hands.

Under Trump, the disaster response has been far better than under Biden, when so many people were left to suffer in North Carolina and other places.
