We have a massive flood and kids die, not because a flood hasn't happened before, it has happened many times in that area, but because no one was warned about it in time to evacuate.

Where were the Sirens? The Amber alert type messaging on the phones etc.....non-existent.

Turns out, that the ALARM coordinator whose job it is to take the warnings from the NWS had left the job because of DOGE and TRUMP's cuts.

So when the alarm came out, no one was there to tell the local police, fire department and other first responders, no siren rang out - nothing - just a rush of water 20' high taking children down the river.

Thoughts and Prayers is like saying, Beers and Farts - just completely useless - we need action, we need to FIX stuff like this, we need to FUND science and technology that makes our lives safer and better.

Hell, we see KIDS killed in schools and we can't get REASONABLE gun controls in place that would help eliminate this.

We are so busy, chasing the all mighty dollar that people don't matter - LITERALLY they don't matter.

This is 100% what is wrong with our country we need to stop reacting and start planning and being proactive.

Until we do that, tragedy after tragedy will happen.....

Our country is screwed until we can embrace science again.....

Opinions are not facts.....FACTS matter....SCIENCE MATTERS.

this country voted for everything that’s happening

this is what happens when we have a 2 party system, and one party is incompetent, can’t govern, actively seeks to ruin and destroy, and is basically a death cult…republicans bring absolutely nothing positive to the table for this country

the Big Bullsh*t Bill includes massive cuts to NOAA

expect a lot more preventable death and destruction in the future

tariffs hiking up prices while they cut social services at the same time, and the mindless drones, many of who are on Medicaid and rely on food stamps, clap in celebration…this is the state of the country

I have people in my family who BENEFIT directly from things that liberals have done, unions, 40 hour work weeks, vacations, medicare, etc....

Yet they are VEHEMATELY opposed to any liberal viewpoint, and even say things like liberals screw up the country and republicans fix it which is 100% opposite of the truth.

I get in fights over them naming one...JUST ONE thing Trump has done that helps them, they have nothing...NOT A SHRED of anything.

In my family 2 of us are college educated (both liberal) and 2 are not -both MAGA - it is not surprising.

We talk about Healthcare and how it will actually save them 2k per year to have a national healthcare program they fall into talking points, name one thing the government runs well (Military, Fire, Schools, Police departments, FBI, CIA etc..etc..etc)....social security...anyway, the final thing from them, is they don't want to help people that don't pay, and I say they already are, as they can legally go to an emergency room - clogging that up, but they get care - which is by law.

    AI Overview

Based on numerous economic studies and reports, including those from the Joint Economic Committee Democrats and the Economic Policy Institute,
the US economy has consistently performed better under Democratic presidential administrations than under Republican ones, particularly in the modern era.

    It is frustrating.

    DD,

Unfortunately, the dollar is all that matters in this country. Everything is assigned a value, whether we acknowledge it or not. Including lives.

Life insurance is based on actuarial tables and associated premiums.

Companies make decisions on capital expenditures, safety stand downs and settlements based on information about wrongful death lawsuits, OSHA liability (negligible) and corporate safety scorecards. Likewise, decisions about whether alarms will be installed, whether Texas power companies must spend to protect against protracted outages, and on and on. It’s all based on calculated risk.

Local officials facing questions over their actions in the years and hours before deadly Texas floods

    CNN —

As Central Texas reels from flash floods that killed over 100 people this weekend, questions are sharpening about whether officials could have done more to avert the tragedy – both in the decades leading up to the disaster, and in the moments after the Guadalupe River began cresting its banks.

In recent years, multiple efforts in Kerr County to build a more substantial flood warning system have faltered or been abandoned due to budget concerns, leaving the epicenter of this weekend’s floods without emergency sirens that could have warned residents about the rising waters.

And while at least one neighboring county issued evacuation orders in the morning hours of July 4, Kerr County officials don’t appear to have done so.

A review of typically off-the-record communications from a real-time messaging system operated by the National Weather Service showed that no emergency manager from Kerr County was sending messages or interacting with NWS staff on the platform, even as emergency officials from other counties were doing so. CNN was granted permission to report some of the information from this platform.

The lack of messages doesn’t mean officials in Kerr County weren’t monitoring the communications from the NWS and acting on them. But it raises new questions about local officials’ actions, particularly in a crucial window between NWS’s first public warning alert at 1:14 a.m. and a more urgent flash flood warning sent several hours later.

Some local officials have defended the decision not to order broad evacuations, saying they were concerned cars could have been trapped in quickly rising waters.

Kerr County Emergency Management Coordinator W.B. “Dub” Thomas declined to comment when CNN asked him to explain actions the county took in the early morning hours of Friday.

“I don’t have time for an interview, so I’m going to cancel this call,” he said.

While NWS issued numerous warnings early Friday morning as the danger increased, it’s unclear how widely they reached those in more remote areas where cell phone service may have been limited – including at Camp Mystic, where at least 27 campers and counselors were killed.

Caroline Cutrona, a counselor at Camp Mystic, told CNN that counselors were not allowed to keep their phones at work, so she never received the NWS warnings. Cutrona was in a higher area at the camp overnight and avoided the floods.

But some campers at Mystic were staying in areas that had previously been identified as high-risk flood zones, government records show.

Ali Mostafavi, a civil engineering professor at Texas A&M University, said the disaster showed how efforts to prepare for floods failed to keep pace with the risk in a region that he described as “one of the deadliest flash flood alleys in the nation.”

Local warning systems “might have been adequate in the past,” Mostafavi said. “But for the new norm, they are not adequate.”

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said on Monday night that the area needs flood sirens and that the state would help pay for them.

“There should have been sirens here,” Patrick told Fox News. “If the city can’t afford it, then the state will step up and we need to have these in place by the next summer.”

Kerr county had requested assistance from the state to help pay for a modern alert system going back almost ten years. The state failed to help.

Sadly, it appears people weren’t even properly utilizing the systems currently in place to avoid this disaster. People were asleep at the wheel.

Are we counting Southwest Texas State as a college? Strong!

In an honest poll, I'd likely be the top vote winner for the smartest poster on this BBS... and I am a slightly right-of-center conservative. Put that into your algo.

That is a very difficult question to answer.

The most honest answer is partially they are, and the Republicans are partially responsible as well.

Climate change and urban development play a big part in it, so does the fire containment/preventive practices and the community.

It is something that people like to blame on a single cause - but it is multi-faceted.

It is like asking if the drug epidemic in the USA is because of Republicans - it is complicated.

Well what is this thread doing? I see blame for a natural disaster on a single cause and one political party.

@DaDakota is attempting to lay blame for this natural disaster at the feet of Trump and Republicans.

    It's illogical, tacky and disingenuous.

    And you "liked" it.

You could complain about underfunding to systems or programs after any natural disaster and claim that's where the responsibility lies. There would literally never be an upper limit on funding.

If the LA fire department had a $1 trillion dollar budget and something happened people would complain and say if only they had a $2 trillion dollar budget and so on and so forth.

    It's just nonsense.

Objectively, you know this not to be true. Here's a perspective gaining exercise: Examine your life. What evidence do you have that points to society rewarding your intelligence? Answer to yourself and do not feel pressure to publicize the results. But now that you've done this analysis, you should be able to issue a retraction and apology for the post above.

Well, it looks like Abbott and his GOP buddies are now all onboard with creating early warning systems. It’s just a shame that so many people have to die to get their attention. Kerr county asked for help with this and the state leaders turned them down. Just remember, the state of Texas is sitting on a 23 billion dollar rainy day fund. Sadly ironic that it’s called the “rainy day” fund.
