Giannis means everything to Milwaukee. This is a business. He is probably worth at least a billion dollars to that franchise. There isn't a Giannis trade to make them a contender within the next decade, the lack of draft picks makes it near impossible. They are completely reasonable for preferring he retire a Buck and they are completely reasonable for making any trade to make him happy. He's loyal enough to Millwaukee and it's not like another MVP caliber guy is walking through that door.
More like Amen. Getting the ball around the logo and creating havoc with driving or stopping and popping with his new found mid-level shooting prowess. He averaged 6.6 assists for the year and will go up significantly without Lilliard in the lineup. The traditional pg role is getting more and more rare. The NBA is getting taller and longer at every position. Durant talked about this phenomenon when talking with Lebron and Nash. The days of diminutive players in the NBA are over. It’s like 250 lb offensive lineman in the 60’s. Athletes in general are getting taller, stronger, faster each year.
Small market teams in the NBA are often kind of forced into making desperation moves in order to stay relevant. I think Milwaukee wants to keep Giannis for another 5-7 years and have him retire there, while rebuilding their future assets when he starts his inevitable downturn. Unless they draft or trade for some absolute sleeper superstar no one saw coming, once Giannis is gone, their marketability and competitiveness is gone likely for 5+ years. The Bucks were almost unheard from for most of the 1990s through 2010s. No one wanted to play there, and they were a development farm for richer teams in bigger markets.
Al Jefferson was the key to that trade and he never made an all star team. Much less at 22 in a stacked division
Fascinating. I had no idea he had enough handle or mid range to do this. No question the league is getting longer and faster. The court size remains unchanged and longer athletes can cover more space defensively as well as rebound. Look no further than Indy and OKC.
Yesterday’s news (Lillard, Turner) means it’s no longer a matter of IF Giannis will leave Milwaukee, but WHEN……..and perhaps whether that will be because it was his decision or the franchise’s. Frankly I thought that reality was clear before yesterday’s news
The Bucks ceiling is a Play-In/1st Round exit. Double Giannis and make Kyle Kuzma/Myles Turner beat you. Trade request incoming by deadline.
Windy is just a hot bag of air. Giannis wants to play PG the rest of his career and the Bucks said yes. He is there for at least a couple of years.
I hear you and I respect your points. But… there are a lot of what ifs… and hopes and dreams… 1 championship followed by a rebuild again, even for another 20 years it’s worth it. Stand pat, i don’t know if we can beat okc in 7. So all that development means nothing, especially with an aging KD.
Potentials and what ifs only matter to a team that’s rebuilding. with a aging KD the window is NOW. you trade international softy all day for Gianns. Sorry.
Milwaukee is a small-market franchise that will never attract all-star or superstar-caliber free agents. It makes perfect sense they would do whatever it takes to keep the current superstar they have. They will get a haul from some team whenever they decide to trade Giannis, and they will immediately revert back to being an irrelevant small-market franchise the day they trade him away. So, as long as Giannis likes being a Buck, he will stay a Buck. If Denver was in the same position, they wouldn’t trade Jokic unless he asked for a trade, too.
Incredible waste of his prime, I can't believe it's Myles Turner that will prevent him from playing elsewhere. I understand the East is wide open next year, but this move doesn't move the needle in the slightest for me. They're still another first round exit, especially with Orlando and Atlanta getting better...
Depends on what you are trading along with Sengun. By himself, he’s worth four or five first-round picks. Roughly seven or, at most, eight first-round picks of value is fair for Giannis. Beyond that, you are better off standing pat and using those picks to add pieces around Sengun and Thompson.
This is an ideal fan perspective that you go all in for 1 championship. From the business perspective, you want to have maximum window to compete even if it doesn't get you even 1 championship because it yields maximum profit. Most teams will make decision from business perspective first and maximize the window, unless you are crazy like Nico/Dallas.
Giannis shot 60% from the field last year and shoots virtually no 3’s. He does get some dunks, but has become very good from the mid-range.
Getting Giannis would still be a what if. Less depth means more minutes for KD what if he gets injured? Its the same situation as what Bucks are facing now. Bucks thought Dame and Giannis would be enough to be a champion, they didnt even reach Finals. So why are assuming Kd and Giannis would be guaranteed success? There is no guarantee in basketball, even Pacers almost beat OKC if Hali didnt get injured. The longer the window the more chances of winning, I dont like a 2 yr window where we must win and after that we are screwed for the next 10 yrs.
